The guys over at DPReview seemed to like it. They had some interesting comments:
The EOS 400D (Rebel XTi) turned out to be everything we expected it to be; a progressive upgrade to the already hugely successful EOS 350D (Rebel XT). Image quality was just as good, with plenty of detail, low noise and sophisticated noise reduction at higher sensitivities an well balanced, and thanks to PictureStyles predictable, color and tone. It also has a significantly improved user interface, dust reduction system, 9 point auto-focus, larger LCD monitor and combined status display / setting change system. All this in a camera which is just as small and light as the camera it replaces.

With all that in mind it's a pity we could so easily have predicted the 400D; with the commercial success of the 350D in their minds Canon clearly didn't want to take any risks with the 'winning formula'. This, however, is perhaps the EOS 400D's achilles heel; that it was so predictable. So predictable in fact that Nikon clearly saw it coming and went one better with the D80; they also managed to close the image quality gap to a degree where the differences are as good as irrelevant.
Just a little puppy trying to make it in a big digital world.

I have the cannon 30D. I have about 3 or 4 lens.

It's really not about the camera, one may have more plastic than the other. The 30D is made out of a alloy.

If I had to do it over again, I would go with the Cannon 5D. It has a full frame compaired to 1.8x. That means no more cropping your pics. Also your lens will be what they say they are. Ex. 17-85 f.4., will be that. Not x1.8. That is with cannon
L-series lens.

It's really all about price. Your lens is where the money is. Just understand about 1.8x. It really makes a difference.

I am very happy with the 30D. I still may buy the cannon 5D in the future. One other thing is weight. How much do you really want to carry around? With a good lens, it can get heavy.

Just something to think about. Enjoy whatever you buy. I think it is a fun way to spend the weekend. Fold on :)

See I don't want to spend too much money... Right now all I use is a Canon S60 that I got back in 2004 and it's well used to say the least. Before that I owned an S50, which blew up when the flash blew up after 10,000 pictures and before that I had an S45 that never failed me... So of the three digital camera I've owned they are all Canon and were the S45, S50, S60...

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canons60/

I'd like to upgrade to a basic SLR camera as my S60 isn't delivering the quality I now desire I paid over ~$500 for the S60 back in 2004, so for the three years it's lasted it more than paid for itself. The most I'd like to spend is $1200 for the lens and body. Not sure if this would help you suggest a body and lens.

My wife is a scrapbook freak, and as such loves "real pictures", so a couple years ago I bought her a EOS Rebel and a couple lenses. All the while, my plan was to pick up a Digital EOS at some point, but I just have had the budget or ability to justify $800+ for a camera body just yet.

I'd love to have one, and from what I've read Canon makes a great product... maybe some day.

Try costco.com. That is where we bought our camera and one lens. One lens came with the camera.

I don't know about the quality of the camera or anything, but something you may want to be aware of is if it'll suit the purpose you need it for. We have a Canon PowerShot S1 and it gives us great pictures, but over time we realized that the size of it is not very convenient to take it places. We often find ourselves handing it back and forth because it's almost more of a hassle than anything. It doesn't fit in a pocket, and it's just not fun to be walking around a party with a bulky camera hanging around your neck or off your shoulder. However, that may not be an issue if you're just wanting to use it at home for your reviews and such.

Very good point, I think Nate will be using this for reviews, factory tours and conventions etc. basically pics for the site.
Nate you should also think about investing in a smaller, everyday camera. You can get one of the lower range "Nikon CoolPix" cameras, they are cheap and compact.
Perfect for when you go hiking etc. I know you like the outdoors, so these are perfect for that.
I have a coolpix L3 which is outdated now, but gives great pics and easy to use (point & click)
You can get them for very cheap too.

DSLR's are great, but bulky.

well my S60 still works and has taken every pic here on the site since 2004 that I have used...

It's 5MP and compact enough to fit in my pair of jeans, so no worries... plus it uses Compact Flash

The Canon XTi is 10MP and is obviously big, but it's needed for trade shows where I do shots more than a foot away like with the S60. I wanted to write arictles about the key notes, but all my pictures came out so bad it wasn't even funny. The XTi also uses Compact Flash, so all my 2GB and 4GB cards and be reused, so no more bills on the storage front.

ideally I'd keep the S60 for small things and use the SLR for everything else.

Guy in my RC club uses a Nikon D40, he loves it. I'll see if I can dig up some of his shots.

At work I have been using a Canon Powershot S5 is 8MP does real good, if you want I can snag it from work one night and bring it by for you to look at.

not to bring up an old post again but hey...least this one i can post with experience..plus i just got out of the hospital for reasons i wont go into....anyhow..Apop...just wanted to let ya knwo the Canon XTI...is worth it....i have one myself...while an amateur photog, i find it very impressive...even though i have the stock lenses...its awesome...Nikons great but i feel and have seen that the XTI does provide a little bit of a better picture...of course that depends on the model :)...just thought id give ya a pointer on it...i would get a 2gb memory card if not more though..the file sizes eat up alot...espeically if u use the RAW format..even with my 2gb card.. RAW maybe about 150..and jpeg can go anywhere from 400 on up at full rez..depends on the quality too(fine or normal quality etc)

thanks for the heads up... I have several 4GB Compact Flash cards from my Canon S60 when I took RAW pictures, so I'm good on the CF card front. I'm waiting on a sale or a good price and I'll jump on an XTI I am thinking.
