You could get a larger car that still gets 40+ mpg. Something that wouldn't get flattened in a collision.

There is such a beast? :-k

I'm hard pressed to find a compact that gets 40+ mpg. Most are in the low to mid 30's.

Not enough head/leg room, same for the chevy Aveo. They are roughly the same sixe as the ForTwo but since there is no back seat there is more room inside.

The ForTwo has a higher safety rating than a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Has one hell of a drivers cage built into the frame.

I wonder if you can get any mowing (or lawn care) attachments for the Smart For Two.

I'd love to have a motorcycle but with my luck I'd be through someone's windshield the first day! I've already survived an abdominal gunshot wound (flatlined twice), a broken neck, diabetic coma and insulin shock (flatlined once). Don't think I'd better tempt the fates too much!! Guess I'll just suffer the crappy mileage at $3.63 a gallon. At least I don't get stuck in Buffalo's snow!!! :drinkers:

Hi neighbor! I'm just up the road from you. Gas in Niagara Falls is $3.73 without Smokin Joe's discount.

Impressive, but wouldn't a brutal stop like that severely injure or kill everyone inside anyways?

Like I said, you wouldn't survive the G's from slamming into the wall. But if it can hold up to that, then getting smacked at a lower speed you would be ok, well at least alive.

But hitting a wall at 70mph in just about any car can kill you.

I'm hard pressed to find a compact that gets 40+ mpg. Most are in the low to mid 30's.

A Ford Escort Diesel back in the 1984-1986 (Mazda engine) got 54mph highway!

A old VW golf diesel gets 52mpg and that has a sibling 2008 prototype hybrid that will hit 70mpg.

A 1979 VW Rabbit diesel gets 45 mpg city/up to 57 mpg highway!

It's just plain wacky that back in the mid 80's plenty of cars were already beyond the 50mpg.

As for regular fuel vehicles, 1989-2001 Geo-Metro got an amazing 46 miles per gallon, all on good old gasoline, from a three-cylinder engine designed by Suzuki.

The Suzuki Swift sold Canada as the Pontiac Firefly got an amazing 58mpg hwy!

The older Mazda 323's got 42mph hwy. However, those were rice burners on a small frame than today's Mazda 3 series that replaced it.

Seeing today's gas sippers sitting around 35mpg is really nothing to talk about. Those cars of a decade or so got the best mpg ... AND that was when fuel was less than $1.30 !!!!!!

Go figure that !

Although I HATE paying high gas prices, I have to consider the positive impacts it brings. Not only does force people into smaller vehicles, thus being beneficial for the environment, but since Canada is the largest exporter to the U.S. (Almost 2 million barrels daily.), it helps our economy immensely.

I actually believe the wholesale price of crude oil isn't whats the driving force of gasoline prices. I've read that its really the refining process. I've read that the U.S refineries can produce about 9Million barrels of gas a day, and U.S. drivers consume 10Million. Now that seems like easy supply/demand economics, but there has been speculation that the refineries are purposely not improving capacity. The Oil industry states that since Hurricane Rita, damages on the equipment has hindered them. I personally think these business are not going improve capacity due to no financial incentive. They are making big money now, without having to invest in infrastructure. The best bet is get a more fuel efficient car and move closer to work. All other solutions to this gas issue are years in the making.

It has already jumped about ten cents a gallon here. They did not wait until next week. I guess that they wanted to get it in before the weekend, maybe that is their mother's day present to everyone :)
