2012 doomsday
Just curious about what you guys think about the prediction of 2012 being the end of the world. I usually dont believe in stuff like tht, but after some research i have found some amusing results.
As many of you know the Mayan calender ends December 21 2012. This is not a random date that they chose for kicks. First off their predicitions of solar equinoxes and eclipses are so accurate that today they are only off by 33 seconds, thousands of years later. So it's a pretty good guess that whatever the end of the world is predicted to be about, it's going to involve the sun.
Many people dismiss this because scientists have told us countless times, that the sun is only about halfway through it's main sequence stage, and it's not likely to blow until another 4 billion years. However, in August of 2006, a reverse polarity sunspot was seen on the sun, signifying the progression towards solar maximum, where solar activity, like solar flares, magnetic storms etc. is at it's height.
Ironically the progression takes about 5.5 years, and do the math and you'll see that it occurs roughly around the end of the year 2012. When it comes to the sun, the Mayans have been 99% accurate every time. Let's hope this is one of those 1%.

Re: 2012 doomsday
It's a common misconception that 12-21-2012 is the "end" of the Mayan calendar, well it is the end in the sense that December 31 is the end of the Gregorian calendar, but that doesn't mean the end, just a new beginning...the quack that got that whole apocalypse now thing going is this guy and it took off because people love to believe doomsday prophecies.
The Mayan calendar is extreme accurate as far as the day goes but that doesn't mean the prophecies are accurate. They are somewhat vague (like a good prophecy should be) and people only latch onto the ones that came 'true' dismissing everything else and twisting things to fit what they want it to say (sound familiar?).
As for the solar cycle, a full solar cycle happens in around 11 years, every 11 years...every once in a while one of those solar flares knocks out a satellite but all we really have to worry about is a few extra UV rays and maybe not being able to pick up our favorite radio station. The only two wavelength spectrums the atmosphere lets through are the radio spectrum and the slightly infrared to ultraviolet spectrum. So don't worry about it unless you have satellite tv (and even then, don't)
You said it right in the beginning, these are amusing results, nothing more. Though I'd be careful what you do with your money because a lot of people do believe it's the end of the world as we know it and while I feel fine, they might freak and...well good chance there may be a dip in the stock market surrounding that time...I have WAY too many hobbies/interests...

Re: 2012 doomsday
if they couldn't predict that an incoming invading army was going to wipe them out, they are not going to predict the end of the world. The "End of the World" for them was when they were wipped out. As for the sun, there would be in incredible increase in size, mass and energy output of the sun before it goes boom. That hasn't happened.

Thats just when the aliens come back and give us the Stargate.

if someone could predict the future, why not get rich from it - lottery drawings, sports betting, etc ;) Even the Mayans could have used it to get chicks or corn or something.

Didn't read the posts, but I don't believe it. I believe someone said the same thing about Y2K, and whopee, it's 2009.
I did hear that there is going to be a meteor or comet striking Earth by 2012 or something.

Re: 2012 doomsday
yeah, it does sound a bit like y2k. this however, has more evidence behind it... errr, predictions, that isgeokilla wrote:Didn't read the posts, but I don't believe it. I believe someone said the same thing about Y2K, and whopee, it's 2009.
but as others have said, if pessimists want something, they may force it, remove the opposing evidence and look solely at the evidence suggesting their idea.
as for me, i think that the world isn't in, well, exactly "great" condition as of now, and the exponentially growing population and climate doesn't help that *~*.
let's all hope for the best, though ^_^!!!

aircommando13, Let's hope that the conflict between Russia and Georgia doesn't get to out of hand. If the U.S.A. gets in the middle everybody is in deep trouble. I/we don't need this ever.

Re: 2012 doomsday
06/06/06 was supposed to be the end, 09/09/99 was supposed to be the end, 12/12/12 is supposed to be the end. I am sure someone will claim that 11/11/11 will be the end, or 1/1/11.
Who cares? When the world ends, there will be no reason to live anyway? Why try to save yourself?
