Florida Man Registers BenedictXVI.com Name

Post by newstech »

Is this covering his bases, thinking ahead, or just plain odd? What do you think he will do with the name?

Here's an excerpt from the Washington Post article:
BenedictXVI.com is not Cadenhead's first celebrity domain purchase. In 1998, he bought Drudge.com in response to the rising popularity of the Drudge Report (http://www.drudgereport.com), an Internet gossip and news site. He still runs the "Drudge Retort" site as a liberal response to its enormously popular namesake.

Cadenhead said he hasn't decided what he will do with the Benedict domain, but he vowed he will not pawn it off to the highest bidder.

"Whatever decision I make will be guided by the desire not to make 1.5 billion people mad at me . . . including my grandmother," he said.

Well, JohnPaulII.com is just one of those stupid parked Network Solutions domains that tries to make a buck off of domain name traffic alone. He'll probably get an influx of curiousity traffic because of the article, but after that he might as well just donate it to the church, because it isn't going to do him any good. I personally hate domain squatters or buying up domains as speculative property. But, judging from his blog, he referred to it comically as "popesquatting," and it pretty much sounds like he did it for a little fun and is going to do something decent with it. Not that I really care though.
