Toyota shut down production on all of its assembly lines today, except one! This is just for today, but Toyota has plans to do this 10 more days in the next two months in order to meet demand!

At least they are paying attention to the economy and doing what it takes to stay afloat during the recession.

GM shut down for an extra 2 weeks at the first of the year, and may do it again between now and July when they have their normal summer 2 week shut down.

well, no, I mean "falling demand"... demand is a scale of low to high... ie, if 1:100 want your product, you are in low demand... if 99:100 want your product, you are in high demand. I suppose 'lack of demand' would mean that 0:100 want your product, and I don't think that is where Toyota is.
For the #1 automaker, their demand has fallen... but there is still demand to be met and they have to cut back on production to meet it. ;)

Rumors are already stating that GM will shut down for the entire month of July.

I wouldn't be surprised, GM will have to do something unless they plan on asking Congress for another bailout. Chrysler seems to have Fiat helping out and Ford still has yet to tap their credit line, but even ultra-efficient manufacturers such as Toyota have gone slightly into the red. Ironically Hyundai's advertisement about allowing returns on their cars in the event of a job loss netted them a 14% rise in sales.
But people aren't going to suddenly switch on and buy cars again anytime soon unless either they have to, or they have money laying around and can't resist some of the best deals. The situation isn't going to change any time soon that is for sure.
