Building fuse panel for Jeep. Need advice.

Post by Skippman »

I've been trying to figure out the upgrades I want to do to my JK and in what order I want to do them. Putting in a great stereo system is important to me, but with a strike looming over my head (I'm in the CWA and work for AT&T) I can't really in good concious go out and blow $2K on audio gear so I figured I'd start a little more humbly.

I want to add some after market lighting. I got to thinking and came to the realization that if I'm going to be adding a second light set on my bumper later and a few other electical odds and ends I might as well lay the ground work for all of that now.

Here's what I'm thinking. Find an old fuse box from some donor vehicle or find something online, preferably something that can handle 4 - 6 loads at 30 amp each. Install that under the hood. Pre-wire all 4 switches in a single bundle to a Daystar lower dash panel w/ 4 rocker switches. I can leave the fuses out of the switched I don't need currently. That would keep my wiring neat and clean.

Ok, here's my parts list so far.

2 x 100 Amp Circuit Breakers
4 x 20 Amp Maxi Fuses
4 x 20 Amp Relays
4 Gang Fuse Block rated at 20 Amp per circuit
12ft x 2 Pair 19 GA wire
10ft x 4 GA wire

This will all be made into one fuse pannel containg 2 independent circuits.

Circuit 1 - Car Audio
---------
4 Ga from the battery to a 100 amp breaker.
4 Ga from 100 amp breaker to car audio amp.

Circuit 2 - Accessories
---------
4 Ga from the battery to a 100 amp breaker.
4 Ga from 100 amp breaker to fuse box.
20 amp fuse to Windshield Lights via Relay
20 amp fuse to Bumper Lights via Relay
20 amp fuse to HAM/CB via Relay
20 amp fuse left in reserve for future mods.
19 Ga wire ran to a DayStar lower dash panel w/ 4 switches, one for each relay.

I think I've got a pretty solid plan here. Any problems you all see with this layout?
