Man, those phones, off contract are crazy prices.
Why are they so much? They seem to be artificially inflated on price.
I can't stand my Storm and my sister is looking to buy it. So I'm looking for a good phone, but $700 for a 3GS is a bit much.

How much do you think Apple is getting from AT&T for each iPhone sold? A darned lot of money, I'm telling you. It's not artificially inflated. That's really just Apple's suggested retail price (which is, granted, inflated). Try buying it unlocked anywhere else on the globe and it'll still be expensive. I remember seeing no-contract pricing in the Philippines as being equivalent to $1000.

I was at the Hard Rock casino in Tampa two weeks ago and lost my storm. I didn't even try to find the POS. The update did fix alot but it was still a POS. I went ahead and broke my verizon contract and the wife and I went with the Iphone 3GS. That phone freaking rocks. Everything about that phone is so much better. The only thing that I don't like is having the fear of losing it.

Yea,the Storm absolutely bites.
I wanted to pick up the 3GS without a contract, but I just don't know at that price. I can't understand, why the when the Storm was going for $500 without a contract, I could get it for $250-300, but with the iPhone it is the full price if not more.
I may just get a 3G 16GB and then purchase later when money isn't as tight.
Another questions:

If I use one of those, would AT&T know I'm using an iPhone? They change you to the expensive (yet still crappy) iPhone plan. I have a better data plan, but would rather not lose that plan.
If not I think they should figure a way to block that with a chip. I'd pay $20 for that. I'd re-cover costs in 3 months.

Don't know what to tell you there Tim about those unlocking devices. It seems like AT&T has a stick up their ass when it comes to the precious iPhone.

I don't get their deal with AT&T from a business standpoint. I understand why ATT is doing it, they are a pretty terrible service company and the iphone builds them a large and expensive customer-base.
But if Apple were to open the iphone to other carriers, the number of people with iphones would increase exponentially and they would make a lot more money themselves. Then again, I'm not sure how much Apple has in stock with AT&T.

Apple didn't think it would go as big as it did. After all, their consumer reviews complained about the lack of basic features for the price. So to minimize risk, they went with Verizon, but Verizon wasn't willing to pay what AT&T offered. So AT&T offered the farm for an exclusive contract for as long as 10 years (no one knows exactly how long it is for).
That said, I don't understand why I can go into an Apple store and get it for $700, but on Craigslist it's going for $750-800. More amazing is I see it going for $775 to 850 on eBay.
