So I have a dog that decided to play with a snake today and guess what he lost. We weren't to sure what happened at first until we took him to our normal vet. He then told us it was a snake bite and rushed him to nearest ER for pets. One of the clerks told us that he will work up some estimates to see what route we would want to go. I told him there was no need for that do what ever you guys need to do. After I got the bill I saw why he was working up options, the bill was for $3200. The Vet said he was in good shape and said he is going to be fine once they put the anti-venom in him and keep him overnight. Tell you what I'm glad my wife convinced me into getting insurance that covers 90% of the bill.

We have been looking at pet insurance also, but cant seem to find any that actually cover a whole lot.

We have a long haired persian cat that needs to go in once or twice a year to be put under and shaved because she hates anyone touching her belly to get the knots out.

What insurance do you have? cost? I would love to see if it would cover anything for our cat.

We use Pet Plan http://www.gopetplan.com/ We have the silver package with $100 deductible. It costs about $25 a month per dog. This will be our first claim with them so I will let you know how that goes. We had ASPCA before but they denied or only gave us a small percentage back on every claim submitted.

Yea, I was always afraid they would deny claims and such. Will look forward to hear how everything goes with this one!

Glad to hear your dog is ok. We too have thought about the insurance for our pets because to us they are truly family members and we'd hate to be put in a position where we had to make a decision about their health based on our bank accounts. Do let us know how the claim is handled.

I'm glad your dog is ok and I hope your insurance isn't run like the place had. The Insurance I had for my Boxer would make me pay the whole bill then reimburse me..only problem was, they would only reimburse me 30% of the bill so I dropped them when they told me my dog wasn't fully covered(I was told she was when i got the policy). I hate not having insurance for my dogs but if I can't get at least 50% of the vet bill covered then it's not worth the monthly bill honestly. Here's hoping yours isn't like that. What kind of dog do you have?

What kind of snake was it? As far as I know anti-venom isn't all encompassing. Since you live in Texas though it can only be a handful of snakes. Cottonmouth, copperhead, coral snake or rattlesnake if my memory serves me correctly.

My dog is a mutt we got from the humane society. He has the body of a great dane, chest of a boxer and a face of a sheppard. So I guess a great boxer sheppard.

The vet said they had no doubt it was a rattle snake. He also said the bite looked like it was a mature snake because of the size. We live in cookie cutter subdivision but have this huge field behind our house. My fear is that this won't be the last time.

Cool dog, glad he's okay and you didn't have to face the decision of savings vs. its life. I wonder if you can contact the county about this and have them either A) mow the field B) clear it C) get a snake wrangler. Since you said you live in a cookie cutter neighborhood I imagine there are tons of small children running around.

I agree with Major_A - get someone in there to clean out the snakes. If it is a place where children are running about, they should be able to do something.

I'm going to look into. That large field touches 3 different subdivisions so I should hope it San Antonio we more inclined to do something. To be honest I no faith in this city, people who work for the city seem real lazy here.
