MMA vs Boxing Answered

I don't know if anybody here watched the fight last night between Couture and Toney but it was entertaining. It reminded me of when your big brother would sit on your shoulders and slap you around a little. I think Randy could have stopped the fight sooner than he did but he wanted to punch Toney in the face a bit first.

Make them fight with boxing rules and bet the roles will be reversed.

I agree. However, that wasn't the case last night.

It's a stupid debate. They aren't the same sport! Dana White said on ESPN that he was praying that Toney didn't land a lucky punch and knock Couture out because than he'd have to have this lame debate perpetuated. The odds were -600 in Couture's favor for the fight.

I'm 30 and was raised a boxing fan. I wasn't raised by an adult to watch it I learned on my own. I was one of the few kids in the 80s to have HBO and just about every weekend they would have boxing on. You could also watch Mike Tyson rip people apart, provided you had HBO, no damn PPV.

Fast forward to now, boxing is stale. There is no one to root for and the few good boxers are mostly uneducated fools. I believe an athlete should make as much money as they can while their body holds up. But I do not think that with the weak contenders and lowered interest that any boxer should still be making $25,000,000 for 1 fight.

All that said MMA is the future, plain and simple. Go back to the first UFC cards, if you knew jujitsu or wrestling you won. Now if you are a one discipline fighter you have a slim chance of beating someone who doesn't match up with your style. MMA fights can end so many different ways that it's fun to watch how the fights unfold.

Boxing fans/aficionados are just upset because another sport is stealing their lightning in a bottle. Move on, fix your own problems and don't complain that your sport is superior to another. If anything all this whining and crying by boxing people has brought more attention to their sport. Now go and do something constructive with that new found exposure.

Totally agree. Remember when if you mounted someone the fight was over? Then there were the submissions that no one could defend for a while like the rear naked choke, guillotine, and arm bar. It has been fun to watch the sport evolve from the first UFC until now. I do miss PRIDE though!

I wouldn't say that. Most boxing nuts I know are loving MMA/UFC for what it is, but to say that one is better than the other isn't right. It would be like having a baseball team play cricket against the EU's best team.

I think stand up MMA fight is entertaining to watch, but a good boxing match is still better. Little more elegant than MMA that and you don't have 5+ minutes every round of one guy setting on another. If you're gonna fight, stand up and fight, don't roll around hugging the guy in to submission.
