Those of us that have mods rights to newsgroups can check the ip addresses of those guests. Many times lots of guests can mean lots of bots from google and other search engines.

usually a bot will only show as one guest though dont they?

when Google probes a site it's not unusual to see 15-20 bots at once, each following a seperate thread.
I'm assuming other search engines use a similar'gangbang' method
