It is pretty sad that our tax payer money is no longer funding jobs in the communities that we pay our taxes too.

Government agencies in California and at least 29 other states have contracted with foreign firms for information technology services, sending jobs and taxpayer dollars overseas, said a report released Wednesday by labor advocacy groups.

The report, commissioned by WashTech, the Washington Alliance of Technology Workers, did not estimate the total dollar value of state offshoring or the number of jobs involved, saying only a limited amount of the activity could be documented because of the lack of information. It called on states to require contractors to disclose where their work is carried out and to create a database of contracts for public review.

The Actual report: Good Job First

After reading the actual report I'm sad to live in Missouri... Missouri is tied for 3rd as the state with the most outsourcing firms on the list of vendors for tax payer money spent...

I heard that about Missouri on the news a while back..........We, the people need to do something about that..........elections are coming up......time to go out and vote....if that will do anything..........

Hey, it can't hurt to vote, that's all we got. Besides the biggest problem we have in this country is that tooo many people have their head in the sand and don't look up till the train hits. I don't remember the exact numbers but it works out that less than half of eligable voters actually vote. How sad is that? we have the best system of gov. in the world today and our greatest strength is also our biggest weakness. WE MUST USE OUR VOICE OR BE SILENCED FOREVER. A tad dramatic I know but not far from thwe truth.

sadly, only 35% of eligible voters (?) vote even in the biggest elections, and less than 20% in some minor ones, yet 99% complain bitterly about the results!
voting (hopefully being an informed voter) is the ONLY constitutional obligation imposed of the citizens,and among your most valuable rights.
but most ignore or avoid it, and we see the result.

The good news (for me) was the part on Washington state canceling, and recieving a partial refund on the one contract they did outsource.
Like most states we are in a severe budget crunch, but given the number of unemployed,underemployed programmers in (who are getting up to $32k a year in state unemployment benifits!)this area right now, it didn't make sense for it to be outsourced in the first place.
Someone in the department of short-term thinking must have planned that one.

I brought this up with my mom, who is in the Vermont State House, some time last year when i found out about it. She has since then turned it into a big deal and Vermont has been looking at ways to prevent this type of outscourcing. The real problem is that the states use private business's to run the programs. For example in Vermont the food stamp program was run by a big New York financal company, JP Morgen i think. JP had moved its call centers to india to save money and increese profitability. When my mom found out that people who where unemployed in Vermont were calling for help with their food stamps and talking to people in india she asked the simple question, "why are we paying some one out of country to talk to our unemployed here?" Now its a huge debate in Vermont. They are trying to find ways to bring those jobs back to the state.
