Re: NFS: Undercover...anyone else playing?

Post by skier »

picked it up today, here's my thoughts(as a racing game junkie(i have every NFS from NFS2 SE-> NFS 12 Undercover now and all Gran Turismo games until PS3)):

(Graphics analysis)
the world is very appealing graphics wise, as is minor parts of vehicle, but damage is TERRIBLE when compared to Codemasters' DiRT(which is from early/mid '07) which i have been playing as a racing game, the world is slightly better(and it is obvious comparing it DiRT as it has skyscrapers from quite a distance away looking "alright" as opposed to grass very close looking "good") but Undercover just has very little damage modeling, which is upsetting me, and i won't stop thinking about it until DiRT 2 comes out, which has an even BETTER graphics engine than DiRT 1, so this will look even WORSE! the damage modeling on opposing cars is even better than you own, i don't know why, but it is. the world damage is average, it's no Crysis, but better than Underground. another thing is that anti-aliasing only goes to 6x, this doesn't look awful by any means, but 8x would be nice, and in general, there just aren't enough graphics options, plain and simple. This is half graphics and game play, but i definitely like they way that videos aren't in your game quality, but are actual video quality, it's very refreshing, since they could have done this in almost all of the NFS games

(Gameplay)
not having played through the entire game, i cant really be sure entirely, but after two hours(and about ~30 races or so(may be?)) i think the game has a fairly good story line, somewhat generic after seeing the "Fast and the Furious" trilogy, but original to game play, which is nice, it's familiar, yet new. the way you enter races is very original, and i like it as it always gives you the option for that next race, but if you just wanna cruise around, you can. the race modes early in the game are very random difficulty-wise, certain modes you win by one second, others you have a 15 second lead, this i don't entirely understand, but it doesn't matter too much, as long as the harder ones are possible at most skill levels you will always have some variety, not always stupidly hard, not always too easy. I'm not a big fan of the way mods take place, but I'll let myself get further into the game to criticize it as I've only gotten lvl one performance, BUT at this point, i dislike the fact that you get the first level of all performance mods at the same time, i like earning them one race at a time(though this way is slightly faster)

look out for a GRID analysis once i get it
