Quake 4
Quick question.... Has anyone had the pleasure yet?
Is it any good? I have the chance to "aquire" this game for €40 (new)
I was hoping some readers could point out it's flaws (doom3 engine) and good points (not doom3) = ie. IS IT WORTH THE €40 OUTLAY???
If it's like doom3 - then I won't bother -- doom3 was worse than HL2.. all you done was walk into a room, then backstep as you kill a monster and repeat..
Thanx in advance
Ken

Hey, I liked Doom 3. The first few levels scared the **** out of me in ways that no game had for a long time- then after that it became predictable and repetitive.
The multiplayer though sucked balls. That's where I'm worried about Quake 4. Except if it's Enemy Territory mod has any roots in Wolfenstein ET, with an xp system and different classes, with class specific weapons and gameplay styles- then that would make it very awesome.

Much much better than DOOM3 or HL2 in my opinion. Non-stop action from start to finish, just like a war should be.
DOOM3 was too slow and repetitive, HL2 felt like a kiddy game with the puzzles and jumping and racing elements.
Bases get overrun, breaking through enemy lines, etc etc. Rather liked the story line.
The only problem is the scripting is a bit more noticeable than in most other games, giving it a bit of linear feel to it. Though I guess I'm a bit spoiled by FarCry's openness.
Other than that, loved it. The few areas that did require a flashlight you had backup, there were few/no enemies, or the power comes back on after killing one enemy. Darkness was mainly for atmosphere in between the action in Q4, and the flashlight is attached to your most often used weapons, the assault rifle and blaster pistol. Of course, depending on the difficulty, you'll probably never fire your pistol more than 50 times.
(No time limit on flashlight either.)
Haven't played multiplayer much, but pretty similar to Q3A. I mainly got it for the singleplayer. Multiplayer will come from Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory + Battlefield 2? That's a surefire winner.

It's as fast paced, possibly moreso, as Doom 3, but there's less run and gun (though, you can go that way) and enemies popping out at you from the darkness.
I like it much better than Doom 3, which got boring after about 15 minutes.
I bought both FEAR and this because when I get tired of one (i.e. FEAR scaring the crap outta me), I go play the other :p. The MP to both are okay...I haven't explored much of the gameplay there.

holly crap guys! I've been playing it for the last two days and got to tell ya - I've never seen better graphics then this yet. the action is awesome, lots of variety and play is excelent- especially I like the team shootups. ...but the graphics are just amazing...
only played singleplayer so far, but it was allready worthed to buy.

The game is best played without having watched any trailers, previews, or as matter of factly, anything at all.
ID really goofed by letting out probably the biggest plot twist in the entire game so easily.
I was a bit disappointed when it finally happened, but it was still enjoyable nonetheless.
Running on max settings at 800x600 16xAF too. Amazing how well the engine scales even on my POS $99 budget card.
Edit: 16xAF, not AA, lol.

Knowing that the most important part of a game is the first 15 minutes, then hearing it gets better later on.
Ill probably play for another hour, and if i still cant get into it, and it still looks like C&C renegade, im done with it. My work machine aint great, but a 2.8 p4, 6600 gt ultra, 1 gig pc2700 should be able to play the game smoothly at highest settings. But some of the movements are to harsh, and not natural to me.

It's OK for a mindless shooter, but the thing that really annoys me is all the backtracking you have to do. Fight your way through to an objective, then get an order to go back to where you started, and oh yeah, somehow more baddies snuck back in to the areas you already cleared.
Runs good at 1280x1024, 4x AA, High quality, but the textures themselves seem to be very low res. Up close they look like ass.

That's also what I found....GFX look great, more visable lighting effects etc. But too boring....better than Doom3 but not much.....
By the way...1600x1200 all settings maxed
