Orange Box
Re: Orange Box
While in steam online mode you can click file, then change to offline.
I finally got my games to update. I had to back up all of my game files, reinstall steam, then copy and paste all 18 gigs of games back into steam... what a pain.
I remember back before CS 1.6 when steam was released. The program is as bad now as it was back then!

Re: Orange Box
well, i dont need offline mode now, but i will once i get E1 going right, i tried deleting game cache but it still happens, and it is not CPU or vid OC related(i bumped my FSB down by 3 to make it stable enough to play HL2 and TF2 both without crashes)
it is very frustrating!! i have E1, but it wont play, and i JUST beat regular HL2 so its too boring to play, and im not playing E2 'til i beat E1

Re: Orange Box
I had to reinstall Orange Box after a motherboard death. First time around it took two hours to install and update. Second time 3 1/2 hours to install and update on a 3.2 GHZ machine, Sata 2 HD, and high speed internet from a sata DVD/lightscribe drive. I was like WTH, usually you like to play a game shortly after forking 40 odd dollars for it.
Since it's tied to the account name and stuff I wrote the info inside the game case in marker cause eventually I'll want to replay it and won't remember the info. I can under stand key codes and encryption to prevent piracy but completely locking you out of a 48 dollar game cause the dog ate your registration info (or what ever) seems a little extreme to me.

Re: Orange Box
Yep, steam screwed me again... One day of getting to play the games I purchased and I can't play again. It now says "cannot connect to the steam network, go to http://www.steampowered.com"
I get this message even in offline mode. I will be reinstalling again tonight.

I just wonder if it's steam not liking your dial up connection, I had it not connect a few times on my SAT internet. I was lucky restarting it a few times got it connected and the error went away on it's own.

Re: Orange Box
Can you reinstall just steam from the link you posted earlier? I was on dial up until this year so I know what it's like. I used to set the updates/downloads and go to bed, then maybe by noon the next day they'd be done. It's a great FPS though. I toughed my way through HL2 then went back after I beat it and did the Impulse 101 thing, increased ammo limits and raged on it for another day or two. Now I gotta go back in and do E1 and E2 and portal. I'm waffling though since I had a bsod (fixed with 1st bios update) and had to do a repair on XP I've taken a performance hit so prolly reloading/backing up this weekend. Can't stand some thing I don't know is a hundred percent.

Re: Orange Box
i still have problems with my offline mode too, if i open it online, then disconnect it it works fine, but if i start my computer offline, i cant go into it at all, im assuming it is because TF2 needs online, and steam doesnt know if you plan on using TF2 or just the offline games

with the steam update, now i can go on TF2 offline(which makes no sense really) but it HAS to be online for HL2 and E1
this makes NO sense to me, offline games need a connection, and online games dont?

Re: Orange Box
I don't know how often it needs it, but stats are gathered by valve on how you play the game, and where you die etc, so they can make pretty stats pages like this:
http://www.steampowered.com/status/ep2/ep2_stats.php
I think broadband is being taken for granted a bit too much lately.

Re: Orange Box
well, it doesnt matter now, i get, yet again some more "Internal driver error in Direct3DDevice9::present()" whenever i attempt to load(beit a save or start new game) and i guess it is a directx error that only ATI cards get, so basically i have never found ANYTHING that ATI is better than Nvidia in, and ATI is just a PITA
(i cant OC properly,
i cant use latest catalyst
, i cant use latest Directx
, and most things dont read ATI specs properly
, and nvidia is kicking its ass performancewise now
)

Re: Orange Box
you can try this to rid yourself of directX errors, http://majorgeeks.com/DirectX_Happy_Uni ... d4347.html
Completely uninstalls directX, then do a clean install of 9.0c. Couple of times I ran into faulty directX installs (usually from a game installing an older version over a newer version) it can cause untold headaches. It's a small dload like 1.5 Meg. Saved me a lot of headaches. For some reason when an older version gets installed over newer it still reads 9.0c installed, but the files are mixed. Almost impossible to solve with out a reload, or complete uninstall of Directx.
Hope it helps.

now that you mention it one of my games mighta installed 8.1 over 9.0c, but it wont let me uninstall DX, is it because of the version of DXhappy...because if i want to completely uninst., it says "we no longer offer this function"Methious wrote:you can try this to rid yourself of directX errors, http://majorgeeks.com/DirectX_Happy_Uni ... d4347.html

Re: Orange Box
Don't know customer bought it while I was working on his gaming rig a while back, ran it and ran dxdiag after reboot and it was gone. Reinstalled 9.0c and it fired up.
Here's another remover I've used that works and is freeware. http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=509 DirectX Eradicator 2.0
Given the volume and severity of your issues, I'd do a restore point and a backup (if possible). Then run DirectX Eradicator 2.0, then run driver cleaner pro, reboot into safe mode and rerun driver cleaner pro. Reboot into windows and install DirectX 9.0c, reinstall latest drivers your card supports. Reboot a final time. Say a few computer prayers and give it a go from there.
Check and see if it's DirectX first or Drivers first then DirectX first it's been a very long day here and I'd hate to steer you wrong. That way your starting with clean directX and clean drivers. There's an off chance it may be the video card (doubt it) malfunctioning. Have you tried the card in a different puter?
