all the Half Life games pretty well on most any system. I don't think I even touched the settings when I installed the orange box.

As for my opinion of the Games (you asked for it)...

Half Life 2. Half Life was probably my favorite game ever, and then, came Half Life 2, which ruined my entire outlook on the series. Sure HL2 was prettier, and the gravity gun kicks ass, but there was nothing "different" about the game. Every time I would come to a point, which in HL would have challenged me, in HL2 I knew what to do, so I quickly bored of the gameplay. I completed the game, but I don't want to share that part of my story until you complete it.

HL2 Ep1. wasn't bad... at least no worse than my opinion of HL2.

HL3 Ep2. only about 45 minutes in... <see above>.

Portal.... F'ING ROCKS! Game was pretty short, but I absolutely loved it. Hopefully, they come up with more challenges and release them through patches or through Steam... or even a "Portal 2".

Team Fortress 2. My LAN group played TF Classic for a LONG time. It was an awesome game. Great characters, well balanced weapons... good clean fun for the whole family. I haven't played TF2 a great deal (a few hours) but it is much the same as the original. I like it a lot, if you find a good server. I usually play on DiG server, as most of the guys there are pretty cool and the server is usually packed.

I originally refused to buy the orange box, because I owned HL2. I actually played and beat Portal on a buddies' machine... but eventually bought it the day after Thanksgiving when Best Buy had it for $25.

I was playing orange box on my X2 4200/asus geforce 7300GS and it played really good. Was on last scene of Episode one and reloaded machine for MOBO upgrade. Had no issues with install or game play.

On the X2 6400/8800gt it rocks socks maxed out on all settings. Never knew games could look so good.

The episodes are a little short, higher weapons come a little late in the game (like usual), crossbow zoom is excellent for sniping, pulse rifle gets my best all around rating, shot gun for fast zombies, gravity gun lotta fun learn it well. Probably play it again on harder settings after I play Company of Hero's. Takes like an hour to load, hour to update (on 512 kb connection). Write down/print the codes you get from steam so you can reinstall it if you need to, they hard butt on re-issuing info.

Use no cheats or hacks on multiplayer they'll ban you permanently in a heart beat. Team Fortress 2 is a hoot watch out for the scouts their secondary weapon is a baseball bat and they fast as greased snot.

you MAY have to keep your dail-up on while you play, though, because of steam (or some file protection app that comes with it), not positive about this. plz correct me if im wrong.

It just has to be updated game files, as long as steam is reporting 100% updated you will be able to play it almost like offline mode.

I feel sorry for you if it starts doing the updates, you'll be stuck unable to play it until it has done.

For single player I always start it in off line mode, first update took an hour, ran fine after that. If your on dial up you might want to go check out rest homes while it updates.

well i've been playing HL2 for about the last nine hours and now im on "we don't go to ravenholm" and this particular level sucks, it makes me so jumpy cuz of the zombies coming from every which way and hiding in the dark, not to mention they're just....creepy the whole level is strange, the pairs of legs dangling from above, the giant saw blades, and the V-8's with fans attached to them :| <anyways> the boat is really fun, especially when you get the machine gun attached to it :) and the gravity gun is preety sweet, im amazed how when you pick up paint cans and hit em with the GGUN(or whatever it actually does) whatever they hit gets a nice little coat of paint  and the game is definatley not too demanding on your rig, i play it @ 1280x1024(max res for my good ol CRT monitor) and mostly on high specs and get anywhere from 25-130 FPS on my setup, basically i love this game, my only gripe is the installation, you got your hour-and-a-half long Steam update  then your about 2 hours long installation (or would have if i actually let it, but i didnt have that kinda time, i wanted to play dammit!) so i cancelled after 40 min,(it was barely halfway through the install) and just installed only HL2, and that took just 5 min  that REALLY aggrivated me, but then i was happily on my way

- oh, and im not a big fan of Steam, its pointless most of the time

I have dial up and The Orange Box. Right now, I cannot play any of the games because my steam just sits and searches for games when in online mode. I have let it sit for an hour and will not show any games.

In Offline mode I can see all of my games, but they won't play in offline mode because steam knows there has been and update and they can't be played until they are updated.

I Love Half-life
I HATE steam

have you tried re-installing the orange box(unless you can just reinstall half-life)?

just make a back-up of the profile

oh, right, well, where do the updates go? are they just individual files in Program Files? if they are, make a backup. then copy, paste them back in.

so what, do you think its a failed install of HL2?(and some other files for TOB) and that is screwing the whole pc up?

Even if he were to back up the files, reinstall, then copy the files back into the folders, it would still be the original install with the updates.

If it were a problem with steam, this might help. I just don't know what is causing the problem.

what did the error say, it may be an issue some other people have had, next time it comes up, search for it, you could at least figure out what's causing the problem, MAYBE how to fix it.
