For system link, is all I need to do just get a Ethernet cable and hook up the two Xboxes to play? Or is there some sort of special ethernet cable I need?

If its just two xboxes without a router/switch or anything then you will need a crossover ethernet cable. If routers/switches etc are being used then normal ethernet cables can be used instead.

what is this 'switch' you speak of? I know what a router is but not a switch.

Think of them as industrial sized routers. I'm not sure what the key differences are, but they essentially do the same job.

by some chance you mean a hub where you can plug in multiple machines?

no, a hub is different in how it works to those two.

Here are the definitions to clarify it for you:

Switch, Router, Hub
