Re: Logitech Announces Logitech Harmony Adapter for PS3
To little to late for me. I ended up buying a dedicated BluRay player which I haven't regreted in the slightest.
I will say, I love my two Harmony remotes. Best $100 ever spent on a HT purchase.

for $60 it isn't worth it, might as well just keep using my PS3 controller, not like its that much of a pain to use
Re: Logitech Announces Logitech Harmony Adapter for PS3
Yep, love my harmony remote, but $60 for an adapter is just crazy. I could buy a whole new friggin remote for that! I will keep using my controller or my PS3 remote till these things hit the $10-$20 mark.

Well, to be fair that products not really geared towards the kinda crowd you'll find on this site. I know of many people who spent over $100 on things like the ToothFairy and other devices that take the IR signals and convert them to Sony's stupid bluetooth protocol.
Why Sony choose not to have an IR port on thier player is beyond me.

doesn't my logitech Harmony 890 already do this or does it need the adapter to work with the PS3?

Re: Logitech Announces Logitech Harmony Adapter for PS3
I understand the arguments against this item - mainly for cost - but I know a BUNCH of PS3 users who are interested in getting their hands on this to work with their Harmony remotes. I don't have a Harmony, but I can certainly appreciate having a fairly affordable RF-to-Bluetooth solution on the market. It would be great if Logitech (or others) introduced a remote that had an integrated BT solution as well.
I personally love being able to use my PS3 without a line-of-sight requirement that RF has. Anyway, i think we will see that there is a market for this device. Hopefully, the price point will come down in a few months.

Re: Logitech Announces Logitech Harmony Adapter for PS3
The Harmony remotes work on IR devices mainly, unless you have one of the more expensive units that supports RF. The BlueTooth protocol is diffrent from the industry standard RF protocol.Apoptosis wrote:doesn't my logitech Harmony 890 already do this or does it need the adapter to work with the PS3?
The Playstation 3 doesn't have a way to turn it on remotely that doesn't require BlueTooth. Most people have been using cheap USB IR adapters to control the device after either maually turned it on, or using a PS3 controller to turn it on. Since the IR adapters are USB when the PS3 is on standby those ports are not receiving power you cannot send a "turn on" IR code to it.
Several companies have made a business out hacking appart the PS3's BlueTooth remote and hard wiring it to an IR receiver, the ToothFairy being the most well known. Those devices typically retailed for $100 or better. So for $60 this things a bargin. If I hadn't bought my Oppo I would be buying one of these ASAP.
As for the line of sight thing, in my bedroom where I have the Plasma TV mounted on the wall and the components in the closet I used a fairly inexpensive IR solution that consists of a IR reciever affixed to the bottom of the TV connected to a repeater via cabling. That repeater is in tern connected to a set of IR blasters in my closet which are affixed to the front of each device. Works flawlessly and the whole setup probably wasn't more than $50.
