The wait is over! The Battlefield experience is now available to anyone, anytime, anywhere – for free.

Today, EA launched Battlefield Play4Free, a deep, rich, adrenaline-filled Battlefield all-out war experience. Battlefield Play4Free delivers an endlessly entertaining experience that combines the most popular maps from Battlefield 2 with the popular classes and powerful weapons of Battlefield: Bad Company 2, all rendered with stunning visuals.

Progress through the game to learn new combat skills and earn in-game currency to spend on an array of devastating weapons that will help propel you to victory in epic 32-player online battles. At every level you’ll be creating a more unique, more customized soldier and creating your own, personal playing style to take to the battlefield.

Battlefield Play4Free raises the bar in the free-to-play space even further with 16 different vehicles including the Mil Mi-28 attack helicopter, its nemesis the F35 VTOL jet fighter, the massive Russian T-90 main battle tank, and the hard to catch LSV light strike vehicle.

IGN has already proclaimed that the game “...has all the components of what someone would expect from a Battlefield game, for free.” What are you waiting for? Play Battlefield Play4Free today!

I played it for a bit today. The graphics remind me greatly of the Desert Combat mod for 1942. They are quite primitive compared to some other games out there, yet I like it more then BFBC2's graphics as its easier to see opponents and just makes for better gameplay.

Sadly though they put a lot of limitations on it and those silly RPG elements they have added in the other new titles. Like for instance you have to level up and train skills to be able to do things like Pilot a helicopter or airplane which came up today when I spawned on an aircraft carrier and there was only 1 person that could fly because everyone was new so we had 10 guys standing around F-35s not being able to use them. Which seemed really stupid.

Then the weapon system is quite limiting and will have a ton of balance issues. You start out with a certain kit of weapons, then you have to buy new weapons. You can spend in game generated currency to rent weapons for 1 day or 3 days, or you can spend real $$$ and buy weapons for longer periods or lifetime. So I started out with this crap rifle, then after a few hours I rented a M16 and the difference is huge as the accuracy is amazing. I was able to head shot people while firing bursts while so far away I could barely make them out on the monitor.

The other huge limitation is you pick a character to start, and that character has a set role, Assault/Sniper/Medic/Engineer; but if you want to change that it seems that you have to pay them real $$$. I created assault at the start then tried to go sniper, but it pops up a dialog box asking for gold coins which you buy.

But the core BF gameplay which I used to love in BF1942 and BF2 is there and it is free. Vehicle combat is still awesome!
