Providing acceleration for all leading video standards, powerful video scaling for the burgeoning widescreen digital media experience and a host of programmable creative and artistic effects, the Chrome S27 is fully compatible with Microsoft’s Media Center Edition to ensure an unbeatable entertainment experience.

Geared for Silent Running

Power consumption is becoming a critical parameter in the PC world, as usage continues to increase in the home for game play, digital photography, media playback/recording and home office and communications, both in terms of spiraling power costs as well as the noise pollution that is becoming increasingly unacceptable, especially in living room systems.

Developed utilizing the fourth generation of S3 Graphics’ unique Power Wise architecture, the Chrome S20 series features advanced power management features usually found only in mobile solutions, such as multi-domain dynamic clock gating. This efficient and power smart design, coupled with Fujitsu’s advanced 90nm process technology has enabled the Chrome 20 series to set new standards in desktop power/performance without compromising on features, and allows completely silent fanless add-in cards.

Introducing All-New Technologies

The different skus of the new Chrome S20 series introduce two new key technologies designed specifically to offer new value to end-users:

-- MultiChrome™ - Chrome S27 introduces S3 Graphics MultiChrome, an open-platform and cable free multi-graphics acceleration technology. MultiChrome will enable two or more Chrome S27 cards or GPUs to operate together to provide additional game acceleration on any motherboard with suitable PCIe slots, and its completely open, non-propriety demonstrated support on multiple vendor chipset solutions is another industry first for the Chrome S27 product.

-- AcceleRAM™ - S3 Graphics AcceleRAM technology featured in Chrome S25 enables big memory performance while leveraging the lower cost structure of reduced on-board memory. AcceleRAM allows Chrome S25 to operate with 32-bit or 64-bit wide memory interfaces with local frame buffers consisting of just one or more memory chips. AcceleRAM boards with Chrome S25 offer a smart upgrade path for cost sensitive segments.

Wow, that's actually beginning to become an impressive graphics chip! Is this still going to be strictly an onboard video solution or will manufacturers actually make an add-on card based on this chip?

Ok, well, I meant "impressive" in terms of thier past onboard graphics processors. In that scope, it is impressive.

X-Bit labs wrote up a news article about the S3 graphics chip and predict performance at probably about X600 level:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/video/disp ... 84544.html
X-Bit Labs wrote:While S3 Graphics again declined to comment on performance of its Chrome-series products, it said the new “silicon produced by Fujitsu showed up to 75% performance improvement over earlier S3 Graphics generations”. In case of 75% improvement over GammaChrome S18 Pro product released earlier this year, then, in the best case, the Chrome product is to score about 2600 points in 3DMark05, or a bit less compared to the RADEON X1300 PRO, and about 6500 points in 3DMark03, or inline with the RADEON X700 PRO.
EDIT: WOAH! Nate has an avatar!!!!

....and yet another blurp on S3's new graphics found at Tom's Hardware:
http://www.tgdaily.com/2005/11/03/via_a ... index.html
TG Daily wrote:The selling point of the S20 series however is not really performance, but much more performance per watt, a discipline that typically is not important in the enthusiast desktop graphics space. Via says that the GPU will consume 11.6 watts, which is less than half of Nvidia's mobile 6600 part - according to S3. The entry-level S25 chip, which runs at "more than" 600 MHz, consumes less than 10 watts, the company said. One secret of the low power consumption of the graphics processor comes from the integration of Transmeta' Longrun 2 technology that S3 was able to access through a partnership with Fujitsu. Longrun, originally developed for the Crusoe processor, has been licensed by Fujitsu.
^^I think that is really pretty impressive. To be able to develop such a low power processor that still performs at the level of others requiring twice the power! I bet if they tried to make a GPU to use a little more power, they could make one hell of a video card! We've all already witnessed what AMD can do with a low-power, highly efficient architechture... :-k =P~

I for one would not mind having another player in the graphics card arena!

It looks like this card can do SLI or something like that.... But with more that 2 cards!!!!
The Inquirer wrote:One other nifty thing they do is run in a dongle-free SLI-type two card mode called MultiChrome. The nice thing about it is S3 has no proprietary turf to defend, so you can use it on just about anything that supports two PCIe slots. In fact, you can use it in as many slots as you have, but I am told somewhat off the record that after three cards, the performance doesn't increase enough to be worth it
