VIA Announces Full Support for Windows CE 5.0

Welcomes latest version of Windows CE, ensures compatibility with VIA processors, chipsets and companion chips aimed at embedded devices

Taipei, Taiwan, 28th June, 2004 - VIA Technologies, Inc, a leading innovator and developer of silicon chip technologies and PC platform solutions, today announced support for Microsoft Windows CE version 5.0 embedded operating system, formerly codenamed “Macallan”, with dedicated technical compatibility and full driver support.

Well-established in the embedded market, VIA support for Windows CE 5.0 extends across ultra low power VIA processor, chipset and companion chip options on platforms offered by leading industry players, including the latest VIA EPIA Mini-ITX and Nano-ITX mainboards, targeting small form factor and mobile consumer and commercial devices.

Offering the richest blend of silicon building blocks from a single vendor, VIA caters for a wide array of embedded devices, from advanced thin clients and POS systems to Video on Demand and mobile media centers. Its extensive product portfolio makes VIA a one stop shop for embedded system developers, helping them to reduce time and cost in sourcing and testing various components, and accelerating time to market for new designs.

“We are pleased that VIA will support Windows CE 5.0 by developing innovative hardware solutions that help speed the development of Windows Powered devices,” said Todd Brix, group product manager for the Mobile and Embedded Devices Division at Microsoft Corp. “With increased support for embedded hardware, including 60 production-quality drivers optimized for leading chipsets, Windows CE 5.0 enables OEMs to build more exciting and compelling devices and bring them to market more quickly.”

“Through its customizable design, Windows CE 5.0 is well suited to the myriad of new Personal Electronics based on our ultra low power processor platforms,” commented Steven S. Lee, Head of the VIA Embedded Platform Division, VIA Technologies, Inc. “The richer graphics and security feature set of Windows CE 5.0 will enhance the performance of embedded devices, driving the x86 platform further into consumer markets and extending VIA’s leadership in this market.”
