Ah Johnathan didn't lose the money... ABIT fronted the money and this contest is part of the reason ABIT went under and was bought out. Many in the industry (myself included) believe that this was rigged for publicity by the fatal1ty crew and ABIT was kept in the dark about it. It gets complex, but he that's just part of the industry...

yeah --- this event happened on October 15, 2004 and shortly after ABIT ran out of money... The budget for 2004 and 1H 2005 was already reserved and set though... Then in June 2005 ABIT needed funds badly so they brought in Wan Hai Industries as an investor to help bail them out... The next 6 months were tough and by the start of 2006 even the investor saw ABIT as shaky. Then just days later on January 25, 2006, ABIT announced that USI intended to purchase ABIT Computer's motherboard business and brand....

It wasn't just this event it was the rumored 10 year contract with Fatal1ty, huge six figure bonus at his signing and spending nearly $500,000 on a single event (ACON4) and spending tons to get Fatal1ty to where he is at today... ABIT was the first deal inked with Fatal1ty and while it sky rocketed him it killed the old ABIT. To spill a few more beans when ABIT went under so did the fatal1ty contract and Fatal1ty and crew were able to get out of the deal they inked with ABIT on video cards as they were unhappy with it anyway. ABIT never was big into GPU's and never released top end cards unless you count the Ti4600 days many years ago. With ABIT gone and the contract dissolved they were able to sign XFX as their NVIDIA provider of GPU's. ABIT was retained for motherboards.
