Kingston Technology Releases 800MHz FB-DIMMs

Next Generation High-Speed Server Memory Technology Ready for Multiple Platforms

Kingston Technology Company, Inc., the independent

is releasing a family of 800MHz DDR2 fully-buffered
dual-inline memory modules (FB-DIMMs) designed
for systems using Intel's Seaburg S5400 chipset.
Launching first with its industry-standard ValueRAM
modules, Kingston® 800MHz FB-DIMMs are shipping
in capacities ranging from 512MB to 4GB.

whats the difference between these FBDIMMS and say, the kind of DDR2 you and i use?

They have an extra IC that acts kind of like a memory controller which allows to have higher density and more DIMMS since the MCH can't handle the load from alot of memory. They usually have ECC (Error Correction Code) as well to insure data sent is good.

right on. those things work in regular old motherboards like ours that support ddr2?

No they don't. The MCH on a FBDIMM compatible board only sees that extra IC and has no clue what else is going on on the DIMMS, our regular DDR2 relies solely on the MCH to tell it what to do.

Also, FBDIMMS are slower clock for clock so it's not something you want to have.
