SAN FRANCISCO -- May. 22, 2008 BitTorrent, the global standard technology for the delivery of rich media on the Internet, and streaming media leader Orb Networks announced a partnership to enable BitTorrent downloads to be enjoyed on any connected device. By bundling the BitTorrent software client application and the Orb PC application together, the companies deliver faster, easier, anywhere access to downloaded content, personal media, and web-resident content.
The joint solution creates a seamless media experience harnessing all of the rich media downloads users have on their computing systems, including movies, TV shows and music, and provides them with the ability to enjoy all of that content, anywhere, on any screen or audio device. With Orb and BitTorrent installed on their PC, users will see a familiar media library view of all the media on that computer. Organized by media type, users can quickly and easily organize their titles, make playlists, and share content with their friends via email, SMS, or on a social networking-like page. Simply put, BitTorrent enables the download of content to the home and Orb enables access to that content from any device the user may own.
There are already millions of people who use BitTorrent to access a global library of rich media, including branded content from more than 60 movie studios and content providers worldwide through BitTorrent's Torrent Entertainment Network. In addition, numerous musicians use BitTorrent's leading peer-accelerated software to deliver their music, including Radiohead, Dave Matthews Band, NIN, and countless independent bands.
Orb's media center application can stream BitTorrent downloads - as well as music, home videos, webcam video, or any web content - to any other Internet-connected device. Those include IP-enabled solutions ranging from a road warrior's laptop, a Gen-Y's mobile phone, or a large-screen TV at a party, using a game console like Sony PS3, Microsoft Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii.
"The idea of the 'connected home' or 'connected consumer' is certainly not a new one, but Orb's innovative software has truly delivered on that promise and made it a reality," said Doug Walker, CEO of BitTorrent, Inc. "By bundling BitTorrent's leading content delivery technology with Orb's software, we are arming consumers with the ability to access their entire library of digital entertainment and play back on devices in the home or on the go. That's powerful."
"People are tired and frustrated with the constraints that the media world has imposed on their ability to consume their own media," said Joe Costello, CEO of Orb Networks. "BitTorrent is the most popular way to get branded content to your computer over the Internet, and Orb lets you enjoy any of your PC's media anywhere you have an Internet connection. Together we are providing a seamless way for the millions of BitTorrent users worldwide to enjoy their movies, videos, music and more. It's your media, it's about time you were able to enjoy it where you wanted."
