The New Quad-Core AMD Optero™ Processor on Display at Supercomputing 2008
What: More than one dozen systems powered by the new Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor and more than 10 validated server motherboards are currently on display in AMD booth #1883 at the Supercomputing 2008 tradeshow in Austin, TX.
AMD technology partners including HP, Dell, Appro, Colfax, Microway, Rackable Systems, Supermicro, Verari, and ZT Systems, among others, are showing the new Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor in conjunction with a variety of compute-intensive applications such as wind turbine simulation, molecular dynamics, and oil and gas reservoir analysis.
Why: The systems demonstrate the dramatic HPC performance of the 45nm Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor and its superior ability to handle memory-intensive work-loads with enhancements such as a 6MB Level 3 cache, DDR2-800 memory support, and significantly higher CPU clock frequencies in the same power envelope compared to previous generations of the Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor. Recently published benchmarks include:
· 34 percent higher floating point throughput performance than the competition on SPECfp®_rate2006 for two-socket servers using x86 processors¹
· 51 percent more memory bandwidth performance than the competition on STREAM benchmarks for two-socket servers²
· Approximately 65 percent faster job runs than the competition on FLUENT 12 beta (ANSYS) for two-socket servers³
· More than 30 percent better performance than the competition on LSDYNA MPP971s for two-socket servers³.
