Austin, Texas - June 15, 2005 - The Game Initiative announced today that the 2005 Austin Game Conference will host the Khronos Developer University (DevU) to provide up-to-the-minute training on industry standard APIs for embedded graphics and video processing. These APIs, including OpenGL ES and OpenVG, are vital for state-of-the-art game development on emerging handheld platforms including cell phones. The Austin Game Conference on October 27-28th is expected to attract more than 2,300 attendees and provides educational, networking and business opportunities for game development professionals. Khronos DevU will be held on October 26th, 2005 at the same location. Conference details and registration are available at http://www.GameConference.com
Khronos DevU is a worldwide series of educational events run by the Khronos Group to encourage adoption of the Khronos family of open, royalty-free APIs which are enabling the billion-dollar, billion-user mobile multimedia market. Included in the Austin DevU will be the latest developments from Khronos, including: an introduction to OpenGL ES and tips and tricks on how to use the API effectively on low-powered systems, and how to effectively port 3D content from desktops and consoles to handheld devices; an introduction to the new OpenVG 2D vector graphics API that is revolutionizing user interfaces, mapping displays and all kinds of 2D applications with a new level of performance and quality; one of the first in-depth looks at the new OpenGL 2.0 ES Shading Language and how to prepare for the upcoming wave of programmable handheld 3D hardware; and a heads-up on the upcoming OpenMAX? API for accelerating, synchronizing and controlling riche media including video, image and audio. For more details on speakers and topics visit http://www.khronos.org/devu/locations/austin2005.html
"The Austin Game Conference has become a must-attend event for developers of mobile and multimedia content, making it a natural venue for the Khronos Developer University," said Neil Trevett, president of the Khronos Group and vice president of embedded content at NVIDIA. "Khronos DevU is also a great venue for silicon, software and platform vendors to establish a two-way dialog with games developers to truly understand the issues, challenges and opportunities they face - so we can work effectively together to grow the mobile gaming market.?
"The global Khronos DevU events have proven to be the most important place for developers to get up to speed quickly on the critical APIs for handhelds,? said Dr. Jon Peddie of the research firm Jon Peddie Research in Tiburon Ca. "Standards are the most cost beneficial things a developer of a platform or software can have - they minimize porting and development effort, and provide the maximum exposure of the hardware's capabilities in a predictable way."
"More than 1,400 industry professionals from some of the most innovative companies in the world participated in the 2004 Austin Game Conference,? said Christopher Sherman, Game Initiative Executive Director. "The Khronos DevU offers the insights and training from some of the leading innovators in the industry to enable developers to create tomorrow?s innovative content and we are excited to have them join the 2005 conference."
