New Lucid HYDRA 200 Chip Integrated into Intel Platform

Core i5 and i7 / P55 Platform Delivers Groundbreaking Graphics Capabilities
SAN FRANCISCO --(Business Wire)-- Sep 22, 2009 Delivering the industry’s first truly dynamic and universal parallel graphics technology, LucidLogix Technologies (Lucid) has chosen Intel’s next-generation P55 platform to deliver the new HYDRA 200 real time distributed processing chip with GPU sharing capability to next generation motherboards.

Unveiled this week at IDF 2009 in Lucid booth 213, the Intel Core i5 and i7 processors and matching P55 platform (codenamed Lynnfield) with HYDRA is the first to be graphics flexible, allowing for mixing and matching of GPUs in any configuration. It gives OEMS, consumer gamers and game developers the ultimate freedom to choose the computing components they want and need.

The HYDRA 200 real time distributed processing engine is Lucid’s second-generation parallel graphics processor that works with any GPU, CPU or chipset to provide scalable 3D graphics performance in a multi-GPU computing environment. The HYDRA 200 is faster, more flexible, smaller and more power-efficient than its predecessor silicon, the HYDRA 100.

“The graphics-vendor-agnostic Lucid HYDRA SoC allows consumers who are tired of complicated graphics solutions to transition towards ultra-responsive, ultra-realistic 3D graphics performance,” said Moshe Steiner, CEO of Lucid. “The Intel and HYDRA 200 solution levels the playing field for users and provides seamless compatibility and interoperability across components.”

"Intel’s newest high performance Core i7 and Core i5 processors coupled with the Intel P55 Chipset provide an ideal platform for Lucid to introduce its new GPU sharing technology,” said Zane Ball, Director of Microprocessor Product Marketing. “Intel Capital’s longtime investment into Lucid has contributed to the delivery of this important technology, which will afford enthusiasts new choice and flexibility to unleash performance.”

The HYDRA 200 has been tested and optimized to support the Intel platform. In addition to the Intel Core i5 and i7 processors/P55, other Intel motherboard systems incorporating HYDRA 200 are expected to be introduced by the end of the year.

The first announced product with Intel and Lucid technology, the MSI Big Bang high end PC gaming motherboard, is coming to market this holiday season.

if this is even half as good as they make it out to be (90%+ scalability) then this is possibly the greatest thing since sliced bread

Really looking forward to benches on this and performance if will differ from the 1156 to 1366 boards.

For the 1156 the chip almost sounds like it works as an off chip PCIE controller and then some. Gives you more lanes on the board but still looks like it bottle necks it going to the CPU but then again, who knows how much optimization it will do to reduce the number of lanes it needs to talk to the CPU with multiple cards.

We won't know until we get some benchmarks.

Is that a good "heh", as in wait for it to come out before you build a new system (x58) or don't bother?

Not sure they are getting a board to us for review.

I guess MSI is not considering us worthy of a board... From the PR company:
I urge you to review the MSI website on October 29 http://event.msi.com/mb/bigbang/. And, if I have any more news before then I will contact you.
Oh well...

That's pretty f'd up. Considering how great of a job you guys do on your hardware reviews and technical analysis, I'm kind of shocked.

Stuff like this really pisses me off...I know Nate is working his ass off to get readers the best reviews out as fast as humanly possible...when company reps like this basically give LR the finger, it really makes me want to give them the finger back.

As the OP for this topic, I'm upset that I even posted it in the first place...I'll stop now...

:x

Even more f'd up is this whole hoopla MSI is making about the Hydra chip being in the BIG BANG motherboard line up, due to launch today Oct 29. And, guess what? Today is here and there is no mention of the Hydra chip on the motherboard they are launching today.

MSI, :finga:

Everyone says MSI is on the ropes and this is their last hope for consumer motherboards... You would think that if this is the case then they would push the heck out of this board.... You guys know as much as I do on this one, which is nothing.

I'm not that surprised to read this... I mean, if Lucid's hardware is so great, where are the two largest motherboard manufacturers?

It looks like MSI took a risk and it's not paying off... not yet at least
