As the digital home continues to evolve from concept to reality, we are proud to say the digital home of the future is here now with D-Link. The next generation of the digital home will be on display in our major exhibit space at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Embracing the timely theme of "Link Your Life", we are demonstrating how providing the latest technology innovations in Wi-Fi, shared storage, network cameras, multimedia distribution, home surveillance and home monitoring enables today's consumers to enjoy affordable, easy-to-use connectivity in their homes like never before.
D-Link Intends to be a Household Name
Whether it's streaming high-definition movies, photos, videos, music and Web content from a PC or the Internet to an HDTV, or storing megabytes, gigabytes or even terabytes of content for easy access, or remotely monitoring the home inside and out with security systems that can alert parents when a baby needs attention or when emergencies occur, D-Link continues to build its reputation for digital home connectivity. The idea of bringing all of this new technology into reality began when the Internet "went public" and we recognized the impact it would have on the home users.
D-Link Was There When Internet Age Began
Since the company's inception in 1986 with a core competency in Ethernet networking, we have developed advanced networking and communications products including Wide Area Networking (WAN) data communications modems, routers and gateways. These revolutionary solutions enabled Internet Service Providers in the late 1980s and established the technological infrastructure for today's Web-based Internet experience for both business and consumers. When the Internet became accessible to the public in 1995, it was the signal for us to unleash our unique digital home strategy and meet the growing demand from homeowners for reliable, flexible and affordable connectivity.
What Drives D-Link's Constant Evolution?
A key factor in that strategy was our decision to comply with and build upon industry standards that overcome compatibility issues in the home. Simply put, D-Link® products work flawlessly with standards-based products from competing manufacturers, providing affordable solutions that work reliably for seamless connectivity. (Of course, we like to think that once consumers try D-Link, they are eager to implement our solutions across their entire home networks!). Wireless networking, or Wi-Fi, changed the way consumers connect their home, access the Internet and compute. We were first to market and quickly established ourselves as a leader in driving Wi-Fi adoption with fast-paced sales and increased market share. While we were building our reputation as a household name in the digital home, our competitors continued to be in a catch-up mode.
Another key factor has been the popularity of Web 2.0 or Internet for everyone and Internet everywhere, which has made an impact in the workplace and has changed Internet users at home, at work and on the go. D-Link sees the revolution already underway, and believes the network-centric era is exploding around us. D-Link continues to be a major player in redefining the way technology enhances people's personal lifestyles with applications that drive them to a connected digital life.
The result of our efforts is a broad range of new and innovative D-Link products and solutions -- from basic home network infrastructure to advanced devices designed to offer convenience, entertainment, security and storage.
Our latest digital home solutions illustrate the grip the company holds on the digital home market and further exemplify our intentions to retain global market leadership. These solutions also reflect our commitment to meet customer demand for as much wireless speed and coverage as technology will allow.
Home Entertainment
Two of D-Link's latest additions to the digital home of the future are on display at CES and will be available to consumers in 2010. They are the Boxee Box by D-Link and the D-Link PebbleÔ, both winners of CEA Innovation Awards.
The Boxee Box by D-Link, which won the coveted Best of Innovations by the CEA, reinterprets what TV should be. The Boxee Box delivers movies, TV shows, music and photos from a user's computer, home network, and the Internet all on their HDTV with no PC needed. Additionally, Boxee's core social features make it easy for friends to discover new content from each other through social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and others.
The D-Link Pebble is also innovative because no other media player of its size, style and price offers the full home networking capabilities that consumers need to turn their living rooms into complete multimedia entertainment centers. It can stream data from wherever it is stored -- in USB thumbdrives, or Flash memory cards, in network storage (NAS) devices, PCs or on the Internet - with the ability to take advantage of the latest 802.11n wireless technology.
Home Monitoring
If there ever was a "killer app" for the digital home, it may very well be home monitoring. D-Link's long-standing commitment to security will be obvious to CES visitors when they see our trio of new products:
Another CEA Innovation award winner is our D-Link Home Monitoring Starter Kit, an affordable, easy-to-install and use "Connected Home Monitor" system that provides the home with new levels of security. We also are introducing the first security device that doubles as a doorbell. The D-Link 3G Door Phone serves as a doorbell but when the button is pushed it triggers a small camera that allows homeowners to get a full view of visitors to their property from wherever they are - at home or away - using their 3G-enabled mobile phones.
Our introduction of the D-Link Home Energy Monitoring Starter Kit is the ultimate "Green Machine" for the home. By connecting the energy sensors to various home appliances, users can instantly keep track of their power usage. It, too, won the Innovations Award from the Consumer Electronics Association.
On the subject of "Green", we continue to receive awards and praise for our corporate Green Technology initiatives, among the first fully comprehensive eco-friendly programs in our industry. We are making significant efforts to protect the environment -- from design to manufacturing, and from packaging to recycling.
Connectivity
As expected, we will be debuting new solutions designed to make home connectivity faster, more far-reaching and easy to install and manage for the homeowner. In addition to introducing the industry's fastest wireless home access points and routers, we will be demonstrating mydlink™ and NetEasyâ, D-Link's newest solutions for making digital home connectivity true plug-and-play:
mydlink products are created for people who long to embrace a world connected through the Internet, but are afraid they lack the technical expertise to do so. They remove the learning curve typically associated with high-tech devices because they are truly Plug-and-Play compatible, providing easy access to all things digital in the home from an intuitive, convenient website (www.mydlink.com).
NetEasy is the newest software program from D-Link designed to improve the complete user experience for all of our products. It makes installation and setup quicker, easier and nearly automatic. It improves the user's ability to manage their networked devices and receive valuable status information. It improves access to the core functions and cross-functions of those devices. And, it decreases the user's need to obtain technical support by offering proactive troubleshooting NetEasy will be rolled out beginning Q1 2010 with our Xtreme N Wireless Router.
The D-Link RushÔ is our fastest, most far-reaching wireless router yet. There is no need to replace the home router - it boosts the power of any existing 802.11 a, b, g or n router with up to 600Mbps speed and greater signal coverage*, ideal for streaming high-definition content like movies, video and photos. Also setting new speed records is our newest router, the D-Link TouchÔ, with data transfer rates up to 450Mbps*. It is the first router to feature an easy viewing interactive touch screen for quick setup, configuration and management of the router and Internet traffic. And people on the go will enjoy our D-Link Wireless N Pocket Router -- the ideal travel companion that can be used either as a wireless router to create an 802.11n Wi-Fi network anywhere one is needed, or as an access point to add Wi-Fi to an existing wired network.
And, in 2010 you can look for some positive changes to our product designs, packaging and identification, particularly with our home routers. We're also happy to report that all of our 802.11n routers are now compatible with Windows 7, Microsoft's latest operating system. Our relationships with Microsoft, Qualcomm, Marvel, Intel and other major industry players are helping to keep us aligned with the industry for further success.
Where Do We Go From Here?
The future is now, but our vision going into the new decade sees greater maturity of the home networking market with widespread adoption of IP-based media and communication services such as the mydlink initiative, which already is permeating the D-Link product family. Whereas the PC served as the hub of the home network for the past several years, tomorrow's home network will be managed through operator-owned platforms such as set-top boxes and media servers, with the PC becoming but one device among many that live on the home network to help enable home applications. Whatever the future holds, one thing is certain: D-Link will be at the forefront.
