Intel Donates $1 Million To American Red Cross In Support Of Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief Efforts
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 1, 2005 - Intel Corporation's philanthropic arm, the Intel Foundation, announced today that it will make a $1 million donation to the American Red Cross in support of Hurricane Katrina disaster relief efforts. The Foundation will also match dollar-for-dollar employee contributions in support of the relief effort during September.

In a communication to employees, Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini commented on the emotions unleashed by the tragedy: "The thought that major cities will not be inhabitable for weeks or even months is something Americans have never had to face before. There is, of course, the eerie, striking similarity with the tsunami of last December. Thousands dead, families torn apart -- a hole in the human spirit is created by a terrible natural event."

American Red Cross President Marsha J. Evans responded to the announcement of Intel's support for relief efforts, saying "The Intel Foundation and Intel's employees have once again stepped forward with critical support in a time of great need. The Red Cross is grateful to have Intel as an ally as we face the challenge of responding to this unprecedented disaster."

Intel's support is not only limited to financial donations. The company is working with other companies and organizations to determine the communications infrastructure and hardware needs required for the relief efforts.

Formed in 1988, the Intel Foundation is funded solely through donations from Intel Corporation for the purpose of developing and funding educational and charitable programs. Its four-member board of directors is made up of corporate senior managers and is chaired by Intel Chairman Craig Barrett.

The Intel Foundation's mission is to strengthen engineering and computer science education and increase participation in these fields by women and under-represented minorities; improve mathematics and science education for elementary school students; and foster the effective use of computer technology in education. The Foundation also supports the communities in which Intel has a major presence with donations to the United Way and for disaster relief.

In 2004, the Intel Foundation provided disaster relief funding for victims of earthquakes in Iran, and came to the aid of communities in Turkey, Korea, Pakistan and other areas impacted by natural disasters. The Foundation's largest disaster relief effort to date involved support for victims of the Asian Tsunami. The Foundation donated $1 million to help disaster-relief efforts and also matched employee contributions, resulting in a total financial contribution of nearly $5 million. Intel Corporation also worked closely with organizations such as the American Red Cross and Mercy Corps to provide hardware and communications infrastructure support.

In 2004, Intel's corporate, Foundation and employee giving provided nearly $104 million dollars to communities around the globe.
This is great news and I respect Intel's donation.

Yeah, I can respect that, and the nice hefty figure donated total in 2004, that's awesome; but they still need to cool their processors down, lol :P (gotta have some comic relief somewhere eh?)

It's great of them to donate all that cash, but it's just a drop in the bucket for them. I'm wating to see what the Gates Foundation (not Microsoft)gives, they have always given more than any other foundation out there. The guy has given away several fortunes over the years.

Well, speaking of people being good to the public, if you live in SC and/or you have Spinx gas stations around you, Stewart Spinks announced that he would cap prices at 3.19 a gallon, thus operating non-profit for the duration of the spikes, and also he stated that if there is any net profit, it will all go to the Red Cross. His parents raised him well, I will say as much.

Billy boy did pretty good for himself for dropping out of the Uni. No one gave him the money that he has now.

Oh yeah, but he didn't bust his rear for it in the first place, as (if I'm not mistaken) he made his first real money with good ol Steve Jobs at Apple Corp.; ok, maybe he did a little, but nothing compared to those who have small businesses

"In his junior year, Gates left Harvard to devote his energies to Microsoft, a company he had begun in 1975 with his childhood friend Paul Allen. Guided by a belief that the computer would be a valuable tool on every office desktop and in every home, they began developing software for personal computers. Gates' foresight and his vision for personal computing have been central to the success of Microsoft and the software industry."
