Insight Media Releases Real Time 2D-to-3D Conversion Report
Insight Media, the recognized leader in emerging display technology market research, has issued its one-of-a-kind look at 2D-to-3D conversion: Real-Time 2D-to-3D Conversion: An Overview of the Market for 2D-to-3D Conversion in the Home. This completely new report looks at the efforts to provide consumers with content for their new 3DTVs by converting existing 2D content on-the-fly. Click here for complete report details, including the Table of Contents.

The report focuses on the inclusion of real time 2D-to-3D technology in 3DTVs, set top boxes and Blu-ray players. The market for real time 2D-to-3D conversion will grow dramatically and we expect nearly 50 million 3DTVs to include the capability by 2016.

Real time 2D-to-3D conversion, as applied to mobile 3D products, has just been recognized by MIT’s Technology Review as “one of the top ten technologies that will change the world.” Maybe this is a report you should be looking at after all.

Initially, conversion will be addressed by the 3DTV makers themselves, through the inclusion of media processors (SoC) running conversion algorithms. Insight Media expects the market to expand to Blu-ray players and digital Set-Top-Boxes (STB). “We looked into the real-time 2D-to-3D conversion market due to the lack of existing content for all of these new 3DTVs,” said Chris Chinnock, President of Insight Media. “While the quality of the resulting conversion is still fair at best, the reality is that this feature is quickly being viewed as a ‘check-box’ item for many, which has significant implications for the amount of processing power that will be available in 3DTVs, and therefore, the types of SoC (System on Chip) that we will see installed in these sets.”

For the report, worldwide forecasts for real time 2D-to3D conversion were created for 3DTVs (by technology), Blu-ray players and Digital STBs.

· 3DTVs: LCD, OLED, Plasma and DLP Rear-Projection
· Blu-Ray Players: Stand-alone players, not including game consoles
· Set-Top-Box: Includes Cable, IPTV and Satellite

“We spoke with key players in this emerging market to find out how they are doing the conversion process, what the limitations are today and what we can expect over the next few years,” noted Dale H. Maunu, lead analyst on the report. “We also looked at the results and were, frankly, surprised that some of the solutions allowed us to watch a feature-length movie without headaches or eye-fatigue – this is not something we were sure of when we started the report, based on what we saw at CES.”

In the early days of the HD transition, TVs provided scaling capabilities for SD content. They weren’t very good to start, but they got much better. Soon, these better scalers moved to set top boxes and DVD players allowing older HDTVs to benefit for these improved algorithms. “We envision a similar scenario for real time 2D-to-3D conversion,” concluded Chinnock.

The Real-Time 2D-to-3D Conversion report provides a look at the conversion process, profiles of the key players in the industry, forecast for inclusion of real-time conversion in 3DTVs, Blu-ray Players and STBs and an overview of recent Insight Media articles on conversion.

The report is available for immediate delivery as a pdf file for $1,500. For a more complete description of the report contents and highlights, including a Table of Contents, please go to: http://www.insightmedia.info/reports/20 ... etails.php
