apt-X arrives in high-end consumer audio
05/10/2009

High-quality audio codec technology for wireless audio streaming debuts to global consumers in latest “Works with iPhone”, “Made for iPod” Bluetooth A2DP Stereo headphones from Sennheiser

APTX, a developer and licensor of high quality audio codec technology, today announces that Sennheiser electronic GmbH, one of its many new Tier 1 electronics OEM clients, has launched the audio industry’s first mass-market consumer products – high-end wireless stereo headphones using Bluetooth A2DP connectivity – which incorporate the apt-X audio codec for highest-quality sound. Developed by APTX over two decades, and already widely used by audio engineering professionals in broadcast and post-production applications, the apt-X audio codec is designed to compress multi-channel, full-bandwidth audio in a non-destructive manner – for low-latency audio streaming over IP networks, or transmission over narrow-band radio channels – without compromising sonic quality.

The new high-quality Bluetooth stereo headphones from market-leader Sennheiser – the top-of-the-range TRAVEL PXC 310 BT model with NoiseGard Active Noise Cancelling, and the PORTABLE WIRELESS PX 210 BT model – are designed for outstanding wireless audio performance with Bluetooth A2DP enabled media players (iPod, Zune, etc), mobile phones (Apple, LG, Nokia, Samsung, etc) and personal computers with a free USB port. Sennheiser officially launched its next-generation high-end Bluetooth Stereo headphone models at IFA 2009, Berlin’s annual international Consumer Electronics show. Commenting on news of the first ever mass-market consumer audio products incorporating apt-X technology, Noel McKenna, CEO of APTX said:

"This is a major breakthrough for the company, especially in building consumer awareness – ‘mindshare’ – for apt-X audio compression as the must-have ingredient brand for high-quality wireless audio. Only apt-X audio compression delivers truly outstanding stereo sound quality when deployed in Bluetooth A2DP to stream stereophonic music and audio from mobile phones, netbooks, and media players like iPod."

McKenna continued: "Sennheiser is only the first of a growing band of popular consumer electronics brands expected to bring innovative audio products incorporating apt-X audio codec technology to huge markets over the coming years. This year alone APTX has licensed apt-X audio compression solutions to several other top tier manufacturers of headphones, speaker systems, mobiles, and personal computers enabled for stereo Bluetooth A2DP wireless connectivity."

Sennheiser plans to introduce more portable wireless headphone products featuring apt-X over the coming months.
