A-Data Technology, one of the top three memory module supplier in the world and the largest in Asia, was awarded the Good Design Award (G-Mark Award) by Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization (JIDPO) for its Show Me Disk.

G-Mark Award, established in 1957, enjoys the name of the three most prominent design awards in the world, along with the iF Design Award in Germany and the IDEA in the United States. According to the information on G-Mark Award’s Web-site, all winning products of the award are products that can improve the quality of our lives and advance industrial activity. These awarded products “are expected to bring greater abundance to our lives.”

It is the second time A-DATA won the award. In 2003, A-DATA was awarded the same honor for its stylish water-resistance flash product, JOGR flash disk. The phrase “bring greater abundance to our lives” is perfectly in line with A-DATA’s slogan – “Enrich Your Digital Life.” A-DATA has always been committed to the idea of leading with innovation, and will continue to follow the idea and create more products with latest technologies to address consumers’ needs.

The idea of creating a Flash disk that shows its remaining capacity all the time came into the mind of the leader of Show Me Disk design team Vincent Hsieh in January 2004 when he saw a friend of his failed to save files on a Flash disk due to lack of capacity repeatedly. “Many friends of mine who are not computer-savvy are often troubled by the same problem,” said Hsieh, “That’s when I started to think about finding a solution.” While most Flash disk manufacturers focused their efforts on incorporating E-mail and Internet related software or security mechanism into their Flash disks at the time, Hsieh was committed to creating a truly trouble-free breed of Flash disk, and as a result, Show Me Disk was invented.

A-DATA Show Me Disk is the first smart USB Flash drive in the world that utilizes the bi-stable technology, allowing all users, computer-savvy or not, to know the remaining capacity of the disk whenever they want. As its name “bi-stable” implies, the picture elements of a bi-stable display are stable in two states, meaning it needs power only when the content changes. Moreover, the controllers embedded in Show Me Disks are different from most of USB’s in that they are set to detect and show the working status of the disks automatically without having to receive instructions from a host. Combining the two innovative devices, Show Me Disk allows users to have 11 characters displayed on the LCD, and shows remaining capacity in number and in a pie-chart. All the information on the LCD always remains displayed even when there is no power. The new product comes in capacities of up to 2G.

In 2004, the three-year-old A-DATA was ranked by iSuppli as the third largest memory module provider in the world. The winning of the G-Mark Award will further propel A-DATA’s already stunningly rapid growth and help the company realize its promise of becoming the second largest memory module manufacturer next year.
