SEAGATE AND ADAPTEC TEAM TO DELIVER BUNDLED SERIAL ATTACHED SCSI (SAS) STARTER KIT FOR ACHIEVING SIMPLE SAS DEPLOYMENTS

Storage leaders collaborate to accelerate SAS adoption by enabling North American system builders and resellers to realize the powerful benefits of SAS first hand
ORLANDO, Fla.—25 October 2005— Seagate (NYSE: STX) along with Adaptec (NSDQ: ADPT) today announced a powerful channel program designed to promote early Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) deployments by the system builder and reseller communities. At the heart of the program is the SAS Starter Kit which includes two Seagate Cheetah 15K.4 hard disc drives, an Adaptec 48300 SAS host bus adapter (HBA) and the necessary cabling. This kit is designed to easily integrate into any server environment with a PCI-X host interface to allow resellers and system builders to experience the benefits of SAS first-hand.

The SAS Starter Kit gives system builders the necessary components to start transitioning from parallel SCSI to SAS today. SAS was conceived as a best-of-breed storage solution, retaining the time-tested SCSI command set of its parallel predecessor and melding it with the most up-to-date serial technologies available. The result is an enterprise-class interface that is simple to integrate and blends four compelling attributes (performance, scalability, compatibility and SCSI integration) to form a cohesive, comprehensive solution. Servers based on SAS will reach breakthrough performance levels with the combination of Adaptec SAS HBAs or RAID controllers and Seagate's Cheetah 15K.4 hard disc drives.

"Seagate's collaboration with Adaptec to lead the industry transition to SAS solutions continues our 20-year history of SCSI expertise and leadership," said Jeff Loebbaka, Seagate vice president of Channel Sales and Global Marketing. "We've worked together to ensure high levels of reliability and compatibility to ensure a smooth and easy transition from legacy SCSI systems to industry-standard SAS solutions."

"A successful industry transition to SAS depends on the level of collaboration by storage industry leaders, like Seagate and Adaptec, who are willing to go above and beyond in terms of delivering pre-tested, pre-qualified SAS solutions," said Tim Connolly, vice president of marketing for the Adaptec Data Protection Solutions group. "With the SAS Starter Kit, we've done all the work. It is one of the easiest ways to start experiencing the benefits of SAS today."

The SAS Starter Kit is available at a 50% discount off Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for a limited time starting November 1 through December 30, 2005. There is a limit of one SAS Starter Kit per reseller or system builder. For further information about the program, call 1-800-442-7274 or visit: http://adaptecsas.seagate.com

Wow, so are they basically just trying to get SCSI more adapted in workstations and even on the desktop/home user environment? I would definately love 15k+ rpm storage goodness if the price was competitive!
What are the prices gonna be like, I didn't see it in the link?

Serial attached SCSI is not a home user thing... just like normal SCSI...It's expensive and noisy... only real use is servers

Still that hasn't stopped some people going with SCSI!!!

Unless they bring out a solid state drive, which has real capacity and reliability... then we can talk about closing the gap between System RAM and HDD....
