Fusion-io Crappy Code Games Winners Flush With SQL Achievements

dbA-thletes Battle Bloated SQL Code Using ioMemory to Eliminate Competition
BRIGHTON, UK– April 8, 2011 – Fusion-io, provider of a next-generation storage memory platform for shared data decentralisation, today announced the winners of the inaugural Crappy Code Games finals held last night at the Grand Hotel in Brighton during the SQLBitsSQL Server conference.

Fusion-io Chief Scientist Steve Wozniak awarded the Golden Plunger grand prize to architect Gordon Byers for achieving 935,197 transactions per minute. Second place honors went to SQL consultant Konstantin Shapkin for achieving 10,538,499 reads of 8,000 pages in 60 seconds. The third place prize was awarded to database architect Mike Knee for inflating a fact table to one billion rows in one minute and twenty-five seconds. Judging was conducted by renowned SQL experts Matthew Steven and Simon Sabin.

“Since Fusion’s ioMemory unlocks database performance by giving servers direct access to critical data, programmers can finally find and purge the Crappy Code that’s clogging up their systems,” said Steve Wozniak, Fusion-io Chief Scientist. “The dbA-thletes participating in the Crappy Code Games clearly demonstrated how our shared storage memory technologies can increase the performance of databases by simply moving it logically closer to the CPUs. Putting this new technology into the hands of these inspiring SQL experts will usher in a new era of efficiency and performance as enterprises maximize their information assets.”

Crappy Code Games dbA-thletes battled in Manchester and London to win a spot at the finals in Brighton. Contestants were evaluated for their performance in preparing SQL code in four independent challenges:

The High Jump: The highest I/O rate measured in pages read/sec
The 100 m Dash: The highest I/O throughput measured in pages read over 1 minute
The Marathon: The highest transaction rate measured in transactions per minute
The SSIS-athon: The fastest Fact Table Inflation to reach 1 billion records

Coders in all cities competed on a workstation equipped with Intel i5 Sandy Bridge CPUs, 8GB of RAM and a 1.28 TB Fusion ioDrive Duorunning with Windows 2008R2 with Hyper-V installed. The virtual machine featured four virtual processors, 6GB of RAM, and ran Windows 2K8R2 SP1 with SQL2K8R2 directly from the Fusion ioDrive Duo.The competitors code was monitored live on Fusion’s ioSphereplatform management software.

“The results I achieved tonight at the Crappy Code Games on the Fusion ioDrive Duo was an order of magnitude different from what I have achieved before,” said Knee. “When we hit bottlenecks, everything grinds to a halt. This is a whole new lease on database life.”

In addition to the Golden Plunger, top Crappy Code Games prizes included a day trip in a high performance aircraft, a high-speed performance car racing experience, and an automotive racing facility party package. Regional prizes included iPods, laptops, mobile phones and video game consoles.

EMEA Senior Marketing Director Mat Young noted, “It’s incredible to witness the skill and ingenuity of the SQL community and their ability to take on a challenge, rise to meet it and achieve the impressive results we saw at the Crappy Code Games.”

About Fusion-io

Fusion-io has pioneered a next generation storage memory platform for shared data decentralisation that significantly improves the processing capabilities within a datacenter by relocating process-critical, or "active", data from centralised storage to the server where it is being processed, a methodology referred to as data decentralisation. Fusion’s integrated hardware and software solutions leverage non-volatile memory to significantly increase datacenter efficiency and offers enterprise grade performance, reliability, availability and manageability. Fusion’s data decentralisation platform can transform legacy architectures into next generation datacenters and allows enterprises to consolidate or significantly reduce complex and expensive high performance storage, high performance networking and memory-rich servers. Fusion’s platform enables enterprises to increase the utilization, performance and efficiency of their datacenter resources and extract greater value from their information assets.
