MARKHAM, ON - November 10, 2005 - ATI Technologies Inc. (TSX: ATY,
NASDAQ:ATYT) today announced the release of an ATI-sponsored whitepaper by industry-leading analyst, IDC, which finds high performance graphics processing will be "common and expected" for standard workplace applications within three to five years.
Citing examples such as GIS mapping, data visualization, video conferencing and multi-monitor viewing, the IDC whitepaper reports that as more applications make full use of 3D-graphics capabilities in mainstream commercial environments, the necessity for high performance graphics increases.
Applications such as Google Earth, OfficeFX and Microsoft's upcoming new operating system, Windows Vista, which incorporate 3D graphics functionality - will continue to drive high performance graphics into the work environment and make them become a ubiquitous part of mainstream commerce. As a result, businesses will need to understand the requirements of these applications to ensure they select the necessary graphics hardware to meet their needs for the next three to five years.
"We have reached an inflection point in the industry as the need for high performance graphics extends beyond 3D gaming into broader mainstream markets," said Ben Bar Haim, Vice President of Software Engineering, ATI Technologies. "We are committed to working closely with companies like Microsoft and application developers to ensure ATI's top-to-bottom line of graphics processors support all applications and operating systems today and into the future."
Microsoft's forthcoming operating system (OS), Windows Vista, which is set to launch in 2006, is a prime example of a mainstream application that will make extensive use of 3D graphics functionality. To date, ATI is the only graphics company that has released a Windows Vista Display Model (WVDM) driver for its top-to-bottom line of products, including both discrete and integrated graphics. WVDM drivers are required for Windows Vista and enable new OS to deliver a more stable, secure and productive end user environment.
