LG First to License DivX Plus Streaming for Mobile Devices
Barcelona, Mobile World Congress 2013, February 26, 2013 — Rovi Corporation (NASDAQ: ROVI), driving digital entertainment innovation, today announced that Rovi and LG Electronics have agreed to renew a multi-year worldwide DivX license. In addition to renewing LG’s long-standing support for DivX® video playback in LG consumer electronics devices, the agreement also includes the licensing of DivX Plus Streaming™ for LG mobile devices. The inclusion of Rovi’s adaptive streaming format will enable LG to deploy mobile devices compatible with a range of video services from retailers, operators, and content owners, and that deliver an enhanced streaming experience to consumers.
DivX Plus Streaming brings features more commonly associated with Blu-ray Discs to the over-the-top entertainment experience. This adaptive streaming solution dynamically adjusts streams to help deliver maximum visual quality up to full 1080p HD based on available bandwidth, while offering an advanced feature set with support for subtitles, chaptering, multiple language tracks, and trick-play functions such as smooth fast forward and rewind.
“Our collaboration with LG results in products with the ability to provide optimized video playback across a variety of screens,” said Simon Adams, SVP, Sales and Marketing, Consumer Electronics, Rovi Corporation. “In addition to extending our technology relationship with LG, this agreement adds to the incredible support we are receiving from the industry for DivX Plus Streaming.”
DivX Plus Streaming has been approved by studios and adopted by companies helping fuel over-the-top entertainment distribution. The advanced adaptive streaming format has gained the support of the IC vendors including Broadcom, MediaTek, and MStar, and has been selected to power video delivery for Dixons KNOWHOW Movies and a new service from Mei-Ah and China Mobile that provides 4G LTE and 3G service subscribers instant access live TV broadcasts and catch-up video-on-demand (“VOD”) content. The DivX DRM (digital rights management) solution, as used with DivX Plus Streaming, was also recently approved by the DECE (Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem consortium). The result means that UltraViolet retailers may use DivX Plus Streaming to enable their over-the-top services.
Through the new agreement, LG can continue to implement DivX Plus® HD, the premium level of certification available. Whether content is on optical disc, USB drive, or streamed wirelessly between devices over a home network using DLNA, devices certified for the DivX Plus HD profile can easily play back personal and protected Hollywood entertainment in DivX (.avi) and DivX Plus HD (.mkv) formats. Rovi’s DivX Plus Streaming solution builds upon these core DivX video technologies and capabilities in order to bring the same broad device interoperability and playback quality to streaming entertainment.
Attendees at Mobile World Congress visitors will see DivX Certified mobile devices throughout the show floor, and can visit Rovi’s stand (Hall 7, Stand 182), to view live demonstrations of DivX Plus Streaming including a next-generation version that will enable premium content delivery to mobile devices using the new video compression standard, High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) or H.265. Mobile World Congress takes place in Barcelona, Spain, February 25-28.
