ZTE Completes the First 3G CDMA2000 Network in the Caribbean
ZTE Corporation, a leading global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, has completed a CDMA2000 1X and EV-DO commercial network in Port-Au-Prince for HaiTel, the first 3G CDMA2000 network in the Caribbean.
HaiTel is the largest telecom operator in Haiti and one of the largest telecom operators in the Caribbean. Due to the phenomenal increase of demand for high speed data services and the rapid growth of users, the company signed a contract with ZTE in August 2005 to build a CDMA2000 1X and EV-DO network with a capacity of 500,000 lines. The network was built in phases within two years and is the largest 3G CDMA2000 network in the Caribbean.
The commercial network that has been launched represents the second phase of the project. The new 3G CDMA2000 network overlaps with the existing IS95 network and will co-exist with it for a period of time before gradually phasing it out. The new network has shown significant improvements: expansion of the coverage of base stations, reduction of drop call rate, enhanced voice quality and increased capacity.
"The successful commercial launch of the 3G CDMA2000 network in Port-Au-Prince has reinforced our belief in the overall upgrading and replacement of the existing IS95 network equipment", Joseph Maxime Cherestal, HaiTel's Chief Technical Officer commented. "ZTE's world-leading All-IP CDMA2000 system and the diversity that comes with it will greatly improve the service and competitiveness level of our network."
In addition to CDMA2000 1X voice, short message, color ring back tone (CRBT) and professional GoTa digital trunking services, the network will provide high speed CDMA2000 1X and EV-DO data service. In a region like Haiti that severely lacks fixed networking and ADSL resources, wireless data services prove very attractive to users due to their high mobility and low cost. Differentiation and content-rich services will undoubtedly strengthen HaiTel's competitiveness.
ZTE's CDMA products and services have more than 40 million users worldwide as at the end of June 2006. The company has more than forty EV-DO networks in over thirty countries and has built the first EV-DO Rev.A network in the world.
