Hey all,
I've a few short questions here - I'm folding with my cpu (q9550) and a HD4870 - yesterday I put on the new 8.12 driver (which boosts ppd!!!!!!!) and I noticed that my gpu runs at 99.9% when folding. Is there a way to bump this down - say to 70%? I know it will lower my ppd, but isn't running the gpu at 99.9% going to "kill" it? How much stress does folding put on the gpu? I've searched around and can't find anything. The reason I ask is that I wouldn't leave my computer running Crysis for more than 4-5 hours due to the stress it puts on the system...and I certainly wouldn't run it 24/7. So, isn't folding similar then? I want to fold as my grandmother died of Alzheimer's - yet I'm cautious about how many hours to run it daily...
I've only had this rig for a couple of months...and I'd like to keep it for as long as possible...
Nathan

Re: How much stess to gpu when folding?
I have been folding 100% from the start. I haven't had any issues yet. I fold 24/7 for like a long time. I wish something would break so I can buy new parts

Anyways, as long as you keep your temps in check and say below 70C (my limit), you're fine folding at 100% GPU.

There used to be a setting that you could tell the client how much of the core to use (in %) for the single core CPU based fah client. There could be something like that too for the GPU one.
Have you looked around in the settings?

Re: How much stess to gpu when folding?
well, there is just the CPU usage percent(which is irrelevant now because of the fact that the new drivers use no percentage) but if you're on older drivers, then theoretically, you could use less CPU, resulting in less GPU, just a thought

Right click Folding icon in systray, configure, Advanced Tab, CPU usage percent. It defaults at 100%... and even though it says CPU, it mentions the processor available to it, which in this case should be the GPU.DMB2000uk wrote:There used to be a setting that you could tell the client how much of the core to use (in %) for the single core CPU based fah client. To the OP... I've been folding my 6 video cards 100% 24/7 since the GPU2 client came out and haven't had any issues at all. As stated above, i don't let the cards get crazy hot (63 deg C is max for any of my machines right now) even when overclocking.

Re: How much stess to gpu when folding?
Thanks everyone!
Thanks for the replies...I'll keep it going at full strength then. My gpu never gets hotter than 60 at full load (and cpu never hotter than 34)- then 4870 fans are a bit loud...but I don't really mind...as long as it stays cool - I had an old laptop that got a bit "fried" due to too much heat - so I know never to let anything get too hot. And since the new driver put my ppd around 3500-5200 points (depending on those darn 384pt projects), I think I'll run it whenever my computer is on. Thanks again everyone!
