May Folding State of the Union

Post by dicecca112 »

Figured that I'd say something as May has come to an end and the recent happenings with our team.

First of all I'd like to congrats the entire team for responding so well to the lost of Shad, Vrioux, Frosty. After seeing our team PPD drop to 600+, we have rebounded nicely to near 880+ ppd. Our production trend line has a nice uptick in it.

I believe that this is all due to the top 10, which is a testament to some old and some relatively new guys. The oldies have just kept going strong and steady and the new guys like DaIceMan, DarkStar, armstpe, Jeff Grant have add a must need boost to the team in filling the vacuum that Shad, Frosty and Vrioux left.

I'd like to single out victor/nastasha. After putting out average PPD, this user came out of no where to up his PPD close to 1k+.

I'd like to reiterate that if you have a dual core processor, your best bet to help the team is the SMP client. If you found at least 10-16hrs a day, then this is the client. Any issues you need PM me. Setting it in VMware, Linux or Windows is easy.

I'm open to ideas to help the membership here. Whether its a front page plug or whatever, PM, post here whatever. I'll be happy to bring it up with Nate and the rest of the staff.

:drinkers: To the team!

I noticed vic/nat, Iceman, and myself all started back in March and the vic//nat recently started ramping up the production. cheers guys!

although i am relatively new, i plan on sticking around (not like those that must not be named) its a good Forum and a good bunch of people around. I would say definitely put a blurb on the root site of the forum for new users!

Next month my production will take a big hit when i head across the pond for a month, but i'm going to try to put up 3 or 4 more of my stock 6600 in the next week or two. With luck they will keep pumping while i'm gone.

Great job everyone! =D> =D>

I'll have my rig back very soon, chugging along @ 2.45GHz (for now), with 64Bit Ubuntu.

With access to some excess hardware at my work I think in the next month or so I can get some more machines chunking away 24/7.

Is there a guide somewhere to setup a SMP client?

ahh that's simple

Go here and download the SMP Client http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html

You must have a user name and password to use the client when you login to windows

Then follow these instructions
For Windows XP and 2000: install the Microsoft .NET framework v2.0 before installing the SMP client. Next, run the self-extracting installer to choose an installation directory and install the files there. Then run install.bat in the installation directory to complete the install process. The client is started by running the fah.exe binary. More detailed instructions are at the bottom of this page.
DETAILED WINDOWS INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Installation instructions are also included with the client download in a readme.rtf file.

NOTE: The account under which the client runs MUST have a password. Blank passwords will cause the FAH cores to fail.

1. Required component for XP & 2000 (not Vista, as it is built in): The Windows SMP client requires the Microsoft .NET framework v2.0; please install this prior to installing the client. The version 2.0 framework is required; it can co-exist with other versions, but this version must be installed. It can be obtained from Microsoft at the following URL: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en. Administrator privileges are required for install.

2. Unpack files. Run the self-extracting installer to unpack the SMP client files.

3. Client installation. Run install.bat from within the SMP install directory to complete the installation. This will install MPI services that the client needs. If you have Windows Firewall enabled, you may get a pop-up window asking if you should give access to the smpd and mpiexec programs. Grant access. If you use an alternate firewall product, you will likely have to make a similar exception for smpd.

**NOTE** The username and password you provide for mpiexec should be your Windows login that you will run the client under. This is used for authentication on your local machine. It is cached in encrypted form in your Registry and is not transmitted to FAH servers.

At the end of the install process, you should see two lines of output:

If you see this twice, MPI is working
If you see this twice, MPI is working

If you do not see these lines, do not start the client. MPI is not successfully installed, and the client will not run successfully.

4. Run the client:

Run fah.exe to start the SMP client. You will get another pop-up firewall window. Note: We do not currently support running the SMP client as a service.

Indeed, it isn't. 8)

Thanks for the guide, it's up and running now, but it never asked me for my F@H account? So where do the points go? I did enter our team number.

Edit: ...I hit reply too fast again. I need to rename my Windows account to something else than "Admin" lol

After checking out the stats for last month, I told my wife i need to build another machine for folding. She didn't say no, but I got the same look as when I mentioned buying a motorcycle. Needless to say, I'll be sticking with my current equipment for a while. Maybe when the next round of price drops hits, I can sneak a few bucks out of the budget for another system. *fingers crossed*
