That'll catch me in no time and I was just starting to get some better points.

Yes, yes... it's true... I've commandeered the V8 and am going to do various folding @ home SMP research.
right now I have it running two instances of the windows SMP client. (I found that one instance only uses 4 cores).
I plan on folding it like this for 1 week... then on to a different configuration... each for one week.
Here's the preliminary plan:
- All cores on Windows SMP - Complete
4 separate VM's running Linux SMP with two cores each - Complete
3 separete VM's running Linux SMP with two cores each while running the ATI GPU client on an X1950 Crossfire Edition - Complete
Native Ubuntu 64-bit install - in progress
Any feedback or recommendations on this plan?

No native Linux install?

That's a good idea... I could probably do that one last.

yeah I have a recommendation, fold on it at as long as possible

Oh, yes.... after my research, I will leave it folding on the best configuration until Apop says he has a better use for it!

If I read the SMP client conditions or issues. I believe it said that it does not recommend running two seperate clients at the same time. It will be a interesting test . I can't wait to build a machine like that. Fold power squared. Sweet!

Only thing I can think of is to ask how you are testing WU's.
Are you using the exact same ones over and over again? If not I dont think the results will be very reliable..??
Just thinking of how some wu's take longer than others. Unless of course you have a math formula to figure all that into the test (1+1=umm...<3!! - see I could never figure it out)
Mike
Hell I think any config will fold just fine

Numbers will be impressive!

I plan on using real-life results. That's why I'm letting it sit for a week so it has a chance to do a variety of WUs.
When it comes time to stop folding this configuration, I'll probably record what percentage it has completed on its current WUs and then look up the total point value for those WUs it is working on and adjust the total points earned for the setup accordingly. That way I can compare the numbers across all configurations as best I can.

Looks like SMP client gives more points than graphic. Is graphic faster or slower on your v8 rig?

by the numbers its clear. SMP WUs range in from 1k-1.76k. Graphic WUs are much less, 660 I think at the most. Most SMP WUs can be crunched within 36hrs even on X2s, C2Ds at stock can do in about 24hrs+. So its a no brainer, go with SMP over GPU.

ya... looks like on the GPU, its taking me about 12 hours to get 330 points!
and I have 3 vmware instances with two cores each running Ubuntu 64-bit.
The over all CPU usage is only at 85-90% since I have the GPU folding.
The next test will be 4 instances of Ubuntu 64-bit with 2 cores each...

not too impressive... heck only do that one 4-5 days and not the full seven!

Now that is impressive. Now just imagine if you would have about 10 machines like that. That would be a lot of folding.
