Attempt to get work failed :(

OK, I tried a few things to get this F@H jump started to run. So far nothing is taking. :?

Windows XP firewall is turned off, McAfee firewall is off, and my DSL router firewall is off. Still the error of, "Attempt to get work failed."

I've got M$ Framework 2.0 & it's SP2 loaded as well.

I just went with the default settings during the install of F@H.

Is there something I've missed with the SMP client?

Here's a log of what happens ...

The GUI F@H worked without a problem, but after reading the fourm here, much of the people stated that the SMP is the way to go. It's by good wisdom that I know DOS command prompt commands well enough to use SMP so far. Still, things are not getting the work assignments.

Help! :)

the infamous 0s IP address. Easy fix. add this flag to the shortcut for SMP

Code: Select all

-configonly
okay then change the settings that says use IE settings to no. Then restart the client.

So, the real error is, Work Unit has an invalid Address.

If the IE is set to "no", then what else is the trouble? Do I need to go into IE and set something too?

The assignment server is assigned to 0.0.0.0 ... Is that normal?

The GUI/GPU worked, but to complete 1-WU would take a month! My GPU isn't anything big to write about. It's an Asus 7100 nVidia type of card.

This bit of info really helped!

" ... My client got assigned to the IP address 0.0.0.0. What's up? From time to time, we may not have work that matches the requirement of every platform. When that is true, we will not supply you with duplicated work that really isn't needed. We'd rather have some clients idle and repeatedly rechecking for new work than busy for long periods working on something that doesn't need to be completed. Even though your computer may see occasional idle periods, we still value your donations. If this continues for an extended period of time, be sure to ask for help because that's not normal. "

I had to adjust the advanced setting to download priority WU rather than ones that are not priority. When that was done, everything worked! :)

OK, I'm now folding for Legit Reviews. I'll see how this works out on my first run.

Ooooh ouch, that's hot. Dual core CPU up to 61C.

When you used the "-configonly" switch, you selected "no" to changing advanced options. You should chose yes! There's an option to receive scientific WU's or something, you must also select yes to this.
OR you can add the switch "-advmethods" to the shortcut. This will allow you to receive Beta WU's.

Some interesting things are going on that I'm not all that savy to understand.

fah.exe and mpiexec.exe are running processes. However, these start to run at boot up without launching FAH in the DOS command window. Is that normal? How would I know that everything is working alright?

There is a file called unitinfo.txt in the FAH directory that shows:

Current Work Unit
-----------------
Name: Protein in POPC
Tag: -
Download time: August 24 16:46:32
Due time: August 28 16:46:32
Progress: 0% [__________]

Another file called FAHlog.txt shows 2WU done and doing a 3rd. Is this where I get the status on things?

Thus far mpiexec.exe only uses 33% of the CPU cycles of both cores. The Task Manager Window showing both cores are not exactly the same graphing either. The memory on the machine is holding steady at 231Mb out of 1Gb.

Is there anything I can do to boost this for more CPU cycles and memory while it's running?

did you get the windows version? You have to right click in the white space and add client, and then point it to your SMP directory

11 hours and only 2% done. ummmm, is this slow or what?

Of course the project is 500,000 steps.

Is this a big project or just a typical size that usually gets processed??? :-k

OK, it's going on 3am here, so I'm signing off for the night.

my little Dell freebie PC is running a WU with 5,000,000 steps, and it's dropping 1% every 40 minutes or so. It's a P4 1.8 with 768mb of PC2100 ram.

if your running the SMP client with the rig in your sig your not gonna meet the deadline. You should be running the normal client. In order to run the SMP client after 11 hrs you need to be at 30-40% done

Not meeting the deadline is true. The FAHMON shows at nearly noon today that I still have 7days-7hrs+ to go. :(

So, help me here, what is the "NORMAL" client? Which one of them do I download since the website has listing of about 10+ files to download? 8-[

The machine is a WinXP with SP2 and the M$.NET stuff loaded to it's current level.

Is it best to abort and reload the correct SMP client, then grab a new work project to crunch on with the right SMP client for my machine? :-k

The other thing I need to work at, and that is, to optimize the settings of my computer running F@H.

Until I started folding, the OC was working well on air cooling without any heavy number crunching. Even the boot time was excellent using it. With the current SMP client I had to remove the OC.

While the machine was crunching last night, I played around with making a signature. IT wasn't too hard to do with M$-Photo Editor (Win98 stuff) and M$-Powerpoint. I don't know Photoshop nor Photonet to really make it look sharper. But, it will do for now.

Keep feeding me the right stuff, I may get this going good just yet.

This version tends to be more graphical and operates well in Windows. :)

The temps still hover around 61C~63C. I may switch over to liquid cooling. The previous MOBO in this mahince had it running on this processor before. The machine currently has a TT P4 Volcano 478 fan+ heatsink combo. I've done an OC of up to 3.375Ghz using this combo cooler without much overhead of the CPU above 60% for long periods of time. Folding is more demanding and seems to use most of the processors full instructions vs. the simple audio editing I do for 1hr long letures and conferences.

Thanks for the good assistance on getting my machine up and running! :)
