Well, were still having so much fun with this Ubuntu Linux that we plan on F@H with it shortly.

There were a few tips I've learned dealing with the .bashrc file, but would like others to make comments on what they have in their .bashrc file to make things work better with F@H & Ubuntu.

Any pointers are really appreciated getting Ubuntu and F@H to work really nice.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=73885 is a great read for using the terminal, other than that you can pretty much follow matt's SMP install guide, though if you're not installing SMP, be sure to get the right tar. (BTW, matt's guide= )

Also, you don't have to use the terminal to install FAH, you can pretty much just dl it from the net, untar it and run the executable file inside. FahMon, on the other hand, was a good deal of fun to setup. If you're not comfortable with the terminal to get the required packages, Synaptic Package Manager (what I used ) is a bit easier to use IMO (I've done WAY to much Ubuntu research in the last 24hr and I still just know enough to tread water).

For Ubuntu being a Linux flavor, I'm sort of wet under the ears. However, I use to be an HP-UNIX systems administrator back in the mid-80's to the early 90's. It's been so long ago that getting up to speed is like riding a bike again. Anyone have a good set of training wheels.

As for running Ubuntu Linux, that hasn't been any problem. It's the loading of software that's bugging me the most. Logging in as ROOT isn't the Ubuntu way, so I had found out. To do anything, you need SU privileges as sudo -i.

Yeah, I'm still trying to get it figured out as well. I've just been doing everything with the GUI (dl with FF, untar, drag folder where I want it, get packages with Synaptic) then I'll hop in terminal and nav to the folder to run configure and install while praying I don't need any more packages. I'm trying to learn to do it all in terminal (just to learn) but it's taking a little while.

As for running it as sudo, I really like that method as opposed to XP's dangerous run as admin or Vista's "Are you sure?" UAP. I think in a couple weeks when I'm really comfortable with the terminal and get a few aliases setup, I'll be in hog heaven...

Glad to have someone as new to Ubuntu as I am to talk to though (though I wish I had your UNIX experience...)
