Post your war folding farms

Post by Bwall »

I'm curious to see what everyone was folding with, we got some excellent production and I thought that maybe sharing a bit would help others get an idea of what it takes to get the points we did.

My "farm":
2x 9600 GT's 720 core /1900 shader
2x 8800 GT's 720 core /1800 shader
1x 9800 GTX 750 core /1900 shader
2x Q9450 @ 3.2GHz

Right now the best bang for the folding buck is the 8800 GS and 9600 GSO. Gaming performance is below the 9600 GT for both cards but they fold about 800ppd better(~4800ppd). This is due to the GS and GSO having more shaders but a limited memory bandwidth. Folding doesn't seem to care much at all about memory bandwidth.
A really awesome folding rig would be 2-4 of the GS or GSO cards paired with a low wattage single or dual core cpu, my buy would be a dual core Celeron running in Vista and an inexpensive 3-4 PCI-e motherboard.

I was running 24/7:

3 SMP clients on an Intel Mac with 8 cores of CPU @ stock 2.8Ghz
1 GPU client on a Palit 8600GTS (stock clocks)
1 GPU client on a BFG 8800GTX OC2 (stock overclocked clocks)

The 8800GTX was getting about 4600ppd on vista, so those 8800GS and 9600GSO's really do sound sweet.

all running on XP

8800 GTS 512mb GPU client (24/7) c2d e6600
8800 GTS 512mb GPU client ------ c2d e6750
8600 GT 256mb GPU client (24/7) p4 2.8 ghz
8800 GS 320mb GPU client (24/7) c2d e6750
8800 GTS 320mb GPU client ------ c2d e6600
PS3 (24/7)

running windows text client
P4 2.8ghz (24/7)
P4 1.3ghz (24x7) except for the last 2 days when she went down in a ball of flames.
P4 2.8ghz

everything at my house or work was up 24/7 -

So a 8800 gs should do about 4800ppd? is that on Vista or XP? or doesnt it matter? if thats true then it seems like my ppd was much lower than what should have been expected based on what i had running 24/7 alone. I would say that the other systems were running at least 50% of the time- if not more

I guess I should mention that is with an overclock on the GS/GSO cards. What ppd were you getting? I'm guessing ~4k?

well i am not sure exactlly how to find the ppd output for one card. My most points for 1 day was almost 13k. what i had running 24x7 should have been around 11k by itself.
8800 gs 4000ppd
8800 gts 4000ppd
8600 gt 2000 ppd- ?? i am not sure
PS3 1000ppd- again not sure

I know the other 8800gts and 8800 gts 320 - were running almost 24/7 july 22,23,24..
those days I should have been almost 20k ppd..

That depended on how long I was home , which isn't always the same since school is over 2 months already and university doesn't start till september. between 1 and 16 hours.

I'd say a 24 hour on time would create about 1600 points.

I just had:

8800GTS 512MB 24/7
and
8800GT 512MB 24/7 (only for the last week of the comp)

It was really interesting seeing the two video cards I have performed about the same in folding points. I think they both got about 4900ppd.

For a brief time I had the 3450 going on my amd machine, but that's my sons and he was playing TMNT every night on it so I only got about 100ppd out of it.

T7700 - 2.4
T9300 - 2.5
E5405 - 2.0

All on 24/7 for the most part. The T9300 is my home laptop, so its down because I've been testing different Linux Distros, and doing benchs on XP for SSDs

I'm not too impressed with my overclocked GTX 260... The drivers keep crashing and it is hardly turning in 6,000 points a day the past few days.

Aside from the PS3s and last 2 PCs, all the computers I listed were built or compiled by me. I'm in the process of building a new machine for a client I'm hoping to get folding. And another 2 clients are just a decent video card away from diving in.
