SMP or Integrated Graphics?

Hey all,

My Dell m1330 isn't currently folding, but it is fairly powerful and is on probably 18hrs a day or more. Should I run a GPU client on the 8400m GS or should I install an SMP client and run in on my T9300 @ 2.53GHz?

I'm leaning toward an SMP client, but i'm not sure what kind of PPD you get from an SMP client. In the past i've gotten about 440 PPD from my GPU.

Let me know what you think. I've been trying to recruit folders (Like DocFranz). My little brother has a PS3 and I've heard those get decent performance although i'm not sure if you have to install a different OS on it or something. He's definitely not up for that.

Integrated graphics usually share memory. I doubt the GPU client would fetch many points. If you are unsure, and no one else responds (unlikely) you could always install the GPU client and find out how many points you can get out of it. If it isn't what you expect, try the SMP.

I haven't had any luck with SMP, so I can't give you much advice there.

installing SMP in a linux VM will save you tonnes of trouble. there's a linky around here i made with folding pre installed il link you too once i find it and get my ports fowarded again on the new router

I'd probably not want to risk running the GPU client on the laptop GPU as there was all that going around a bit ago with the nvidia GPUs about if you run it too hot it causes it to break, so I'd probably stick to the SMP.

Good call on that! I haven't had any problems, but it is best to avoid them if possible. So SMP, but is a virtual machine really necessary? Can you even have dual-core support in a VM?

It's definitely the best way of doing it, although it will use more RAM once setup. And yes, it is multicore aware.

I run SMP in service mode for both my rig and my sister's AMD rig, and it's fine. It was a pain to set up but once everything's up and ready, you don't need to keep an eye out for the client anymore. We're both using Windows XP.

If you want to run both SMP and GPU on your laptop, I suggest that you get a notebook cooler to keep the temps low, or place it in a cold place. However, since the later most likely won't be possible, and assuming that you don't want to spend money on a notebook cooler, just run the SMP. Watch out for the temps though since laptops are not meant to be placed under high load 24/7.
