What kind of points should I expect to see if I were to fold on a ati 4870?

It's too bad ATI folding has been put to shame by nVidia. I'd love to upgrade to one of the ATI cards, but I don't get to do much gaming anymore so my graphics card is about 95% folding and 5% gaming and I don't want to sacrifice my ppd just for a mild increase in FPS.

Anyone know if this is something drivers will fix or if this is because of hardware differences?

Um XstollieX has been a member for quite some time and asked a fairly legitimate question so no, not a troll thread. As for an answer, I wouldn't know but I do know you get better ppd/$ with nVidia...

not to mention one of the highest ppd's (ok, usually THE highest)

and yeah, ATI gets the short end of the stick in many cases(like lightsmark)

Thanks for the love guys! I was asking because I am putting a new system together. A phenom II with the 790gx chipset. I was contemplating putting the full dragon platform together. I decided against it cause the ppd would suck compared to nvidia.

Yea NVIDIA is the way to go if you fold more. What GPU are you getting? Also don't forget to report back on those overclocks.

I know you've made up your mind, but the previous quote of 2500-3000ppd is a quite a bit off. I've got a 4870 and if I fold 24/7 I can get around 4000 ppd - depending on the work-units - if you get stuck with the 511 pointers...you'll get around 3000ppd...get the 548's and it'll easily go up to the 4000's. I've never folded for 24 hours straight - but the most points I've ever had in one day is 3900 in 18 hours...so theoretically, I might have reached 5000 with good projects.

Today I turned my computer on around 8:30 this morning - it’s now 8:00pm and I’ve got 2375 pts - not too shabby for ATI...now if only I wouldn't keep getting 225 pt projects on my CPU...sigh...So I wouldn't totally knock the 4870 for folding - it still can't touch the Nvidia's...but ATI is getting there. 2 months ago I would have completely agreed, but thanks to new drivers that came out a couple months ago (that had an element specifically targeted for folding) I must disagree.
Just thought you should know!

For the money the 4870 isn't worth it for folding. Not to say it's not a kickin card for gaming, because it is. But for those kind of points a sub $100 card like the 9600 series is your best bet. My rigs primarily fold with some gaming on the side. Think I'm gonna stick with nvidia for both of my rigs.

Same card I did the review on, and my every day Folding, part time gaming rig.
