4830 folding

Post by xevious »

I just bought a sapphire 4830 for a good price. I was thinking of putting it into my system, but because ati is pretty bad with folding, i kinda want to sell it off and stick with my evga 8600gt. Will I get around the same folding performance with the 4830?

I've never tested an 8600gt... but the Folding performance on the HD 4830 is a bit lacking. I would guess the 8600GT would be better in Folding.

on of my rigs is folding with a 4830... I never got exact numbers but a guess is its doing about 2500-3000 a day when running 24/7 personally an old system i had running a 8600 was horrible. For some reason it would always crash between 20%-80% complete and have to restart a new WU. i think like 1 out of 10 would finish. I finally ended up just shutting that one down.

Cool thanks didnt know about that place. So i apparently get 1028 points a day, pretty bad. Thats with an oc'd 8600gt and 8400gs m on my xps laptop.
So I don't have to worry about lack of folding performance on my new 4830. Now, is there a way to still use my 8600gt and not build another pc?

I saw last night my PS3 has been folding..I am not sure if it was the other day when I posted those numbers. I'll give ya an update when I can on just the 4830. 1000 seems low for both those cards- did you check the log files to see if they were completing all the WU's? I think Sporg may have tried to get something like you were talking about working but was unable to due to some driver conflicts. I know at the very least you would need a motherboard with two PCI-e slots.

I tried using a 4850 as the primary and a 9600GSO as the secondary. I was never able to get the GSO to fold. I could load the drivers and extend the desktop, but that's it. What I tried using for folding was the GUI version. I'm trying to remember what the actual issue was. I just remember that they didn't play well together.

As I'm writing this I'm thinking back. I think the installer defaults where the install folder is, so you can't change it during install. I think I ended up with both the ATI and NVIDIA executables in the same folder (c:\program files\F@H...). I then made two folders in c:\documents and settings\username\application data (something like that). I created two F@H shortcuts and pointed them to the new folders in "documents and settings." I think the ATI card was folding, but the NVIDIA card would not. I don't remember if I tried running just the NVIDIA card. If I blew out the .exe in the NVIDIA folder it would go out and grab a new client, but wouldn't fold. I don't remember if I saved any of the log files, and will take a look tonight.

Honestly I didn't spend a lot of time messing with it, just a few hours. I might mess with it again sometime in the future.

Good luck.
