A worth while goal. I just cranked my dual xeon up to 2.6ghz so expect some more coming from that, but the bad news is my main A64 is down at the moment, for some reason it will not boot over 1.6ghz and does not like anything less than 1.65v.

contingent on my build coming to fruition, count me in. I'll have 2 cores to work with, heheheh (read: A64 X2 3800+). I lika me a lil competition, lol . Competition, yet teamwork, what an interesting concept

Whenever your ready ;)
I have 2 cores too... allbeit in two seperate machines
hey, if you have more machines, good on ya. I thought about building a secondary rig and creating a home network after I get settled with the first system. Ideally, I would like them both to be an X2 setup so I can have plenty of processing power for folding .
I have my 2.4Ghz @ 3.4Ghz -> stock vcore! (1.375v) (can do 3.6 max with only 1.385v)
I use for "playing" with linux and as a file server (folds 24/7 of course)
It's also usefull when i need to encode video files... Can still keep my main rig for gaming etc.
ok, one question though: how long have you had that processor now? Just wondering because I heard that Celerons really weren't all that great in concerns with overall integrity. But maybe you can shed some light on this
have it about a year... overclocked from day 1 (hasn't seen more than 2hrs @ stock speed)
I had a p3 celeron 700Mhz which is still running today after ~5 years in a mates pc.....
I think celerons can be bad when they first come out as Intel haven't mastered the manufacturing process (thats why there celerons and not pentiums!)... Nowadays Intel have kinda perfected the manufacturing of prescotts.. So I guess more P4's are just cut down to celerons to keep with market demands.. Mayby my celeron had some "bad" cache.. Intel have 1MB to play with and only need 128k for a celeron..
In my opinion they are the best bang for buck
Remeber they are celerons.... so only usefull for desktop use!
of course, that's what I had in mind for an auxillary unit ; I might actually have to try the new celerons out then, just to see for myself, because that is a good price for them!
I forgot to say --> they run nearly as hot as a P4 !!!
But still.. buy a celeron now... they get a cheapo p4 later on e-bay etc.
just swap cpu's and your "play thing" will stand upto even more abuse...
Kinda like sockett 939 now... the 478 is versatile too.. could even get a dothan chip with the asus adaptor, that's what i plan on doing.. complete silence, low power and performance.. After Yonah comes out next year the old mobile chips will drop in price... (only works with certain asus boards)
I see, one thing though, will the celerons work with the new Intel chipsets that can support dual-core? I want to make sure my secondary system can have some nice goodies to go in it as I get the money to do so. Of course, all this I'm saying is long-term since I haven't gotten my X2 rig built yet. Just thought it would be a good thing to know
no - unless you get newer intel chipset.. I'm talking about sockett 478 => older generation
I'm talking about a budget pc here.. If you want to upgrade in the future to dual core.. go with sockett 939 (amd)... Get a cheap single core amd cpu (overclock the hell out of it of course ) then when you upgrade to dual core AMD's cpu's will have dropped in price (too expensive now for budget system) -> remember socket M2 for amd is out next year... dual core 939's will be mucho cheapo in a while
good point, and I could either sell the Celeron setup for another X2 setup, or I could just buy more components and have myself one hell of a home network ;I'm thinking a 4-port router to start with if I decide to do that; man, this is an obsession and an addiction, one I wouldn't give up for the world, lol (me's a freak ).
especially around the left or right posterior area right? (wallet, lol); it may take a chunk out of one's wallet, but it's a worthwhile investment if you have a legitimate use for the machine. in the case of folding, it's more than worthwhile since you're helping Stanford to find cures for diseases like cancer and diabetes, amongst others.
to keep my apt powered and cool i spend around $100!!! so yeah im there with you guys, that means im spending $1200 a year just on electricity of which at least a half is for folding alone.
"Don't open that! It's an alien planet! Is there air? You don't know!"
At least you don't need the heat on in the winter time, lol; that would sorta make up for the increase in cost to run the machines though....oh well, I still can't wait to get into folding and most of all, can't wait to get my system going because a K6-2 with 192 MB RAM sucks, rofl.
It's barely worth the cost to do word-processing, lol. It's ok though, if it gets me by for a little longer it would have been worth the 250 bucks I paid for the whole system, monitor and all, although I ended up replacing it because it sucks and is unsexy compared to this black 17" I have now, heheh.

Can you run two instances of FAH??? Even with a dual core cpu?
Also... I have a new dilemma.... I have about €1500 bucks coming to me next week.... no real bills to pay and the money is expendable
I was going to get a laptop and spend the rest on clothing, beer and more beer... But now i'm considering buying an X2 4400+ (2mb cache!), along with a DFI LANPARTY nF4 SLI-DR!! - then at the end of Oct. I can buy (or @ least put a deposit on) a new GFX card!
Decisions... decisions
X2 will be alot cheaper in a few months, also ATI's new cards and more importantly their drivers will be better established...
