Stupid Linux newbie questions

Post by KnightRid »

OK, I switched 1 of my computers to linux, and at least 2 more will be going that way in the near future. I have NO idea what the hell I am doing..lol...I got FAH running ( go figure - I get lucky ), but I think I ran it from my desktop, so now I have all kinds of files on the desktop screen

Can I close the terminal window or does taht have to stay open to keep FAH running?

Will it auto run everytime I restart?

Is it OK to run it from the desktop like I did?

I have been reading up on Linux, and honestly, I just get more confused the more i read. I am a hands on kinda guy, so I need to play with it to learn it.

Well since these computers ONLY do FAH for right now anyway, as long as I can get it to auto start everytime it reboots, that would be cool by me.

Mike

Think I need to lay my brain down for a bit - it is stressed from all this :)

I have never folded on Linux yet, so I'm no help. Which distro are you using?

what distro are you using... Overclockix is the simpelist one to set up and run for just folding, and its a bootable distro so just pop in the CD and follow the directions.

Gento is another simple one because once you get the base system installed and then you just need to emerge the FAH client, then add it to the startup script using the RC command.

You should create a folder in your home directory and run it from there....
Also you need to make sure that folder can be read and written to for EMIII to work.

Run the "chmod 777" command -> ie. chmod 777 /home/ken/folding
Also run chmod 777 on the folding .exe

Then you need to share the folding folder and it's contents via SAMBA (SMB) to allow M$ to see the shared folder.....This depends on the distro you use

Once this is done you'll want to create a CRON service to make it run @ startup......again this depends on which distro you use.......

To be honest the easiest way it to download and install "kfolding" and run that in your taskbar in KDE.....this way it always runs and you can also keep any eye on it's status.

Welcome to the NEW/GNU world.......it's ever so daunting, but soo addictive and rewarding.....

I am running Ubuntu...maybe i should switch to one of the others?

ken - ummm, you lost me on so many levels of existence it isnt even funny..lol..NEWBIE HERE..lol - I understand now where my home directory is and not the desktop, and I know about the terminal and running commands - especially SUDO - damn is that important for most everything.

then you went on to samba, cron, kfolding, and daunting - daunting I get ;)

i am really interested in learning Linux, as I might REALLY look into it for a replacement. I still think Linux needs to be easier - double click installs to the proper directories, icons made to desktop and the apps menu, etc...

I noticed F@H seems slow on linux also - was reading about people running Wine with the windows version and it was faster...any truth to it?

Mike

OH - anyone know of any GOOD books for NEWBIES for Ubuntu? even online free ones are ok.

Mike I deliberately gave more info than needed! LOL

Linux is a pain.........but that's what makes it so good ;)

The only way to learn this kinda stuff is by doing......
I personally don't have enough Linux knowledge to make up a guide....
I find the best way to get answers is Google and LinuxQuestions.org
This way I remember howto do it again instead of having someone holding my hand.

I use SuSe10 and it's set to boot straight into the KDE desktop. I create a folding folder in the home directory and then install a little prog called "kfolding" --> kfolding is a little aplet which is easy to install and runs automatically in the KDE taskbar.......Since KDE is set to run @ startup, FAH also runs @ startup.
You can run FAH as a service too.....in Linux it's called a Cron Service.
Depending on which distro you use, setting up a Cron service can be differenet. (Google cause I haven't set it up this way myself)

I am hands on also - just want learn everything in a second - would be much easier to do the Matrix idea than to actually read and learn :p
