Didnt know whether to put this here or in the notebooks forum, so a coin flip later and here it is:)

I was wondering if it is okay to run a laptop 24/7 to fold on. Do they get too hot? does it hurt the battery or does the power cord bypass the use of the battery?

I have that compaq v5201 or v5210 I wrote about in the laptop forum before incase that makes a difference.

I have in the past on mine and when I did I didn't run it at 100% as it did tend to get pretty warm... I currently don't fold on my lappy as I only use my laptop for travel now.

I use my Dell to fold @ 100% CPU.......I make sure the air vents are not covered and the temps never go above 55C

I use centrino hardware control to lower the default voltage to lower temps too.

I don't fold 24/7 with it, but basically from the min I get home till I leave the next morning it's folding. Most, if not all my folding efforts lately have been done on the laptop.

my former roommate has been doing it on his laptop for over 2yrs now with no problems. Like above, make sure the laptop can breath, and you'll be fine.

Sweet I might give that a try this weekend!! I need MAJOR help with my scores here of late lost 2 cpus - my numbers are terrible right now.

I don't have a laptop but I would think you'd want to have it hooked up to the AC adapter. Your battery would use up it's charge pretty fast.

EDIT: I was looking through the preferences on my folding client and there is an option to pause folding while battery power is being used. Then you wouldn't have to worry about it when on the road.
