5 GPU vs 5 Conroe

Post by dicecca112 »

A thread to Watch. Will GPU folding be really worth it?

LoL. that's such a joke. 5 instances compared to 10 is not a comparison. Add 5 more gpu's and you got something.

no you misunderstand. Mac and Landshark are only part time folders for OCforums (Team 32)

Conroe is Dual Core Hence 2 instances. He doesn't have 10 Conroes folding.

5 Conroes X 2 Instance Per Core = 10 Instances.

There is still 5 v 5 here

F@H is saying that the GPU can fold better than a Conroe. So they are comparing it. And if you look at the results so far, they are damn close.

Perhaps you mis-understand. A fair comparison, IMHO, would be 10 gpu instances vs 10 cpu instances. As one client can only do so much work, this is what really is what should be compared...on a client-client basis.

Don't get me wrong, I wholely agree that Conroe may produce almost as much pionts as a gpu, running two instances, but my own system is the perfect example of how much more work gets done by the gpu, with a single instance. I got crossfire, so really, i could run two GPU instances, and then my conroe would really be useless in this system for crunching.

It must be said...points are not equal. the only real way to do this is to have cpu/gpu crunching the same units, and it will be a bit before that happens. We have limited WU's assigned so they can get some real results to ensure that he gpu's are working properly for home users. As it stands now, GPU WU and CPU WU's alike get bonus points, and those bonus points are not of an equal distribution.

Even with all of this, a single gpu client, over time, will churn out more points than a single cpu client. I know this FOR A FACT...as it's what's running on my system right now. No questions need be asked...that's the way it IS.

perhaps, but on certain WUs the Conroe destroys a GPU. Chasr, F@H guru over at OC, has proven it, and I can as well. At the most you get 660 PPD on a GPU, on certain wus you can get 1100PPD with a conroe.

um, take me 5:53/frame, or abt 9.75 hrs perWU on the gpu, so i'm getting about 820PPD, every day.

And, as I said earlier, there are bonuses given to WU's. that particular WU has a large bonus tacked on, and you can confirm this @ the stanford forum, and it's why i mentioned bonus points in teh first place...i know exactly where you are coming from, but you must understand how those points originate. A gpu crunching that WU would finish it faster, once again, which can be confirmed.

Even then, as it stands now, teh gpu client is cpu-limited. My card is NOT getting used 100%, as teh cpu cannot shuffle enough data to it. Stanford has done really well in this regard, however it's really up to ATI to fix this problem in thier driver. So even then, comparison of points generated @ this point in the game is moot.

Specific WU point gain cannot be used as a comparison...it's like putting koolaid in your cheerioes...sure, they get wet, but they don't taste right.

Remember...2700 GPU's will out crunch EVERY OTHER MACHINE CURRENTLY FOLDING, in a 24 hour period.
