Guys, SMP folding is were its at. At my best if all my 5 rigs have the best workunits for there specific CPU, I can get 1700ppd per day. SMP guarentees me at least 1200ppd on my machine alone. And I'm not even running it natively. I'm running Windows XP with VMware Server running Ubuntu 6.10 x64. I'm looking at a 5-10% decrease in TPF.

works perfectly. I highly recommend this for those with dual cores and better. Any help I'll try to offer my best.

Check my stats next week to see how it affects a normal folder.

Basically tomorrow is when I should have my first SMP WU done.

I happen to have MS Virtual PC and SUSE. Will that work OK too?

Turns out the SUSE I have is only 32-bit

So Ubuntu for me anyways.

MS cannot be used, it doesn't support X64. VMware server is free. You just register it and they email a key.

I have to agree. On my old team a lot of us had started to update to dual core and when the SMP client came out it was like a gift. Reading the posts on the folding forum it soon became apparent that the SMP client was the way to go. Some of the members tried both the GPU client and the SMP client and came to the same conclusion.

When the GPU client first came out the only AGP X1950Pro cards available were 8X. My older XP rigs were only 4X AGP so with that fact and the current requirements for the video cards I shut them down. I see now where two vendors have put out 4X/8X AGP X1950Pro cards. I hope in a couple of months to reactivate one of my old XP rigs and see what kind of returns I can get with an X1950Pro AGP card. This may prove out to be a way for people to revive their older folding farms. With dedicated folding rigs the 256Mb cards should be fine but for those updating their daily computer they should go with the 512Mb card.

Just my thoughts and ramblings.

The way I see is it, this gives better numbers than the GPU. I had issues with it. To me the only good GPU folder was the x1950xtx but it dumped way way to much heat into my loop, and it was defective so I kept the card I had and got a refund. SMP is so simple its sad.

SMP is where it's at for points if you've got an Intel Core 2 Duo.

Off Topic:
If it's true that the GPU is doing much more work than the CPU (SMP or not) then Stanford really needs to adjust the points accordingly if they want people to continue GPU folding.

I'll be sticking with the GPU folding for now........Soon I'll be running my card 720/800 for ~12hrs a day. Should be worth ~800ppd, that's incl. the second cpu core and my laptop :D

Sure, but I don't have a C2D......with my setup gpu is the best way to go.

Technically its now two C2D or if you want to get really technical its a Core 2 Duo, and a Memron. Along with a Yonah, Dothan and an old P4 2.66.

With my setup I have 5+ cpus folding for me. But it's just not enough anymore, they're all older.

If anyone can do this and hasn't already then hurry up

My average used to be something like 500ppd (overclocked with 2 normal FAH cores funning), but now I get an average closer to 900ppd (and my CPU isnt even overclocked at the minute!)

Last night I got VMWare Workstation 6 beta running on my main Vista 64-bit machine and installed Ubuntu 7.04 beta 64-bit and got the Linux SMP client chugging along...



Oh, and I have the E6400 running at 2.9GHz ATM... will push more tonight

the system actually locked up at 3.2 after about 15 min of F@H, so I backed it down to 3.0 (375x8) for now until I have more time to tweak.

That's wierd all mine are happy as a clam at 3.2.

Looking at your CPUz report your vcore appears to be a little under. Vdroop is a reality on these Intel based boards. You might wanna try bumping vcore .0125 to .025.

Mine require a range from 1.28 to 1.312 to be stable. If they are not the wu just hangs.

With my Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 I had to ramp the voltage to 1.425 ( or 1.450 ) cant remember off hand right now, to get my C2D E6400 to run at 3.2ghz. That is ramping multiplier to 8X and the FSB to 400mhz. I still have not had a chance to try the multiplier low and the fsb high, been medical crap again.

Well damn - my DS3 says it is 1.325Vcore standard - that is how it was set when I turned it on - you can lower yours from default? WOW!! I wish I could!!!!! I might have to lower it to a 3.0ghz overclock to get the vcore down a bit - It is only +.1, but I want this as my main rig, and that might be pushing it a bit...maybe?

What was your DS3 factory setting? It should say in BIOS - mine does.
What revision DS3? I have the Rev 3.3 with the solid state caps.
